Pearland High School

Pearland High School (PHS) is a public secondary school located in Pearland, Texas, just south of Houston, Texas.

Pearland High School is the only high school in Pearland Independent School District, which serves most of Pearland, Texas (including master planned communities such as Silverlake) and the city of Brookside Village.

The main Pearland High School campus, which serves grades 10 through 12, is located on State Highway 35 and South Main Street. The Ninth Grade Center, which serves grade 9, is located two miles from the main campus. All other Pearland ISD schools feed into Pearland High School.

Pearland High School's mascot is the Oiler. In contrast to the local legend, the mascot was not inspired by the Houston Oilers professional football team (the school was established 25 years before the team), instead it is a tribute to an important sector of the local and regional economy. Several local businesses in Pearland are related to the oil industry, including a helicopter service that ferries people to nearby off-shore oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

[edit] Background and History

Pearland High School opened its doors in the heart of Pearland in 1937. This eliminated the inconvenience for students of having to attend school in Webster. The first graduating class walked across the stage in 1938.

Pearland High School achieved prominence for its academics and size in the 1990s. By the mid-90s, it was classified as a 5-A school with well over 2,000 students.

Today, Pearland High School, inclusive of both the main campus and the Ninth Grade Center, has approximately 4,000 students.

[edit] Activities and clubs

Many activities and clubs exist at Pearland High School, including clubs for foreign languages, student council, the National Honor Society, science clubs, theater clubs (Thespians and Front Row, the main drama club), technological clubs, Academic Decathlon, and the Pride of Pearland Band.

The Pearland High School Theatre Club, known as Front Row, is responsible for productions that include a Fall Show, Fall and Spring SDOAs (Student Directed One Acts), and a Musical that now draws a total attendance of approximately 4,000 people and counting each year. Past musicals have included The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, and Annie Get Your Gun.

The Pearland Marching Band, which was given the name "Pride of Pearland" in 1972, performs at all Pearland High School varsity football games and has received multiple awards in various competitions. The band competes in the Texas State Marching competition and has historically been a top contender. Most notably, it placed 3rd in 1992-1993 and 5th in 1994-1995 under the direction of Jack Fariss (retired). In the 2004-2005 school year, the band placed 4th at Area F Competition, Grand Champion at the SHSU marching competition and 23rd at State. In the 2005-2006 school year they placed 2nd at the Alief Marching festival, and placed 4th at SHSU Marching Competition and received its 41st consecutive division 1 rating at the UIL marching competition under the direction of Doug Grice.

Pearland Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is a program within Pearland High School. The Pearland Army JROTC program is a military oriented program and its purpose is "To Motivate Young People To Be Better Citizens". The course offers many opportunites for high school students.

Pearland High School has a successful Math Club which competes in Number Sense, Calculator, General Math, Science, and Computer Science. They meet before and after school on Tuesday and Friday to prepare for the competitions.

There is also a computer club which focuses on making programs using Game Maker. They meet on Monday afternoons.

The Academic Decathlon team made it to state this year and won more than twice as many medals as the previous year.

The Pearland High School Athletics Department includes the multi-million dollar high school stadium, known as "The Rig", which replaced Prensner Stadium on the former Pearland High School campus. This stadium was built in 2001 and had an artificial surface added to it after the 2004 football season.

Pearland High School has a robotics club known as the A.R.T. club (Advanced Robotics and Technology) that competes on a local level.

Pearland High School and its ninth grade center, like all Pearland ISD schools, are required to enact a "standardized dress" code, which is similar to a school uniform. Students are required to wear solid-colored collared shirts. Bottoms must be tan, beige, brown, black, gray or navy blue.^[1]
