Patriarch John XI of Constantinople

John XI Becchus or John XI Bekkos (also Beccus) (c. 1235 - March 1297) was the Patriarch of Constantinople from 1275 to 1282. He was born in Nicaea and died in Nicomedia. John XI gained the office of Patriarch after Joseph I abdicated, due in part to his disagreement with the success of reunion efforts, such as the Council of Lyon. Although John XI was not always a supporter of reuniting the Roman Catholic Church with the Greek Orthodox Church, he was stedfastly in favor of the reunion after becoming Patriarch, much to the displeasure of various other political forces, whose desire for reunion swiftly abated.
