Panzerjäger
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Panzerjäger (German "tank-hunters") are German armoured fighting vehicles of the Second World War.
[edit] Development
The Panzerjäger (abbreviated to PzJg in German) were anti-tank vehicles ("tank destroyers") produced by taking an existing anti-tank gun complete with gun shield from its carriage and mounting it on a tracked chassis to give a mobile anti-tank gun.
Development of the Panzerjager idea started before the start of the war and continued until about 1943 when the better protected Jagdpanzer ("Hunting tanks") designs took over. Panzerjager continued to serve until the end of the war.
[edit] Panzerjager designs
Notable tank destroyers in the Panzerjager classification were :
- Panzerjäger I - 47 mm PAK on Panzer I chassis
- Marder I - 75 mm PAK on captured French chassis, the Lorraine 37L
- Marder II - 75 mm PAK or reused Soviet 76.2 mm gun on Panzer II chassis
- Marder III - 75 mm PAK or reused Soviet 76.2 mm gun on Czech-built Panzer 38(t) chassis
- Hornisse/Nashorn 88 mm PAK on composite Panzer III/Panzer IV chassis
