Being overprotective means keeping somebody away from having a social life or a career matches their interests. Mothers, father, and sometimes aunts, uncles, and occasionally cousins and in-laws are usually the people being overprotective towards their wards. In the short run, this keeps the dependent safe from hazards. However, in the long run, it will make the person that is given caregiver support depressed and begging for a new life. Children of overprotective parents or other older relatives often act younger than their age group, either wetting their bed, hiding in a fantasy world, wearing diapers and/or tight-fitting clothes from their earlier childhood, or even have frequent nightmares about growing up and being forced to leave his or her home town.

When a child of an overprotective relative is left on his/her own, he/she will often end up in either an institution or a group home, depending on how socialized he/she was before the overprotecting began. Most mothers do not like being called "overprotective" by their children and punish them by talking to them in a stern voice. However, when a stranger calls them "overprotective," they usually listen and try to change at least some of their parenting techniques to face this harsh new reality.

There is a very slim chance that a child of an overprotective adult will get married. However, there will be the chance that the child would eventually become an overprotective parent and repeat the cycle of mullycuddling onto his or her child. However, if the child's spouse is strong enough, he/she can teach the victim of an overbearing family member how to become a more permissive parent so that it doesn't become a vicious cycle.

[edit] How People Become Overprotective

People become overprotective when they discover religion, when they dumped by their boyfriend after getting pregnant (thus becoming unwed mothers), and other strange circumstances that merits a person from preventing others from seeing his or her child. Overprotectiveness is a mental illness that requires psychiatry and may take months, years, or even decades to successfully cure. In the most severe cases, a neighbor or close friend can summon social services to have the overprotected child taken away to a more permissive family. This must be done before the child in question reaches the age of majority, or else the overprotective relative will torment the child for the natural duration of his life.
