Oblivians

The Oblivians were a very influential garage punk band from Memphis, Tennessee in the 1990s. All three members performed on drums, guitar, and vocals, switching during shows.

The band consisted of Greg Oblivian (Greg Cartwright), Jack Oblivian (Jack Yarber), and Eric Oblivian (Eric Friedl). Their last names are stage names for the purposes of the band.

Eric Oblivian went on to form Goner Records, recorded an album with Jay Reatard of The Reatards and King Louie Bankston of The Royal Pendletons as Bad Times (band) and is currently a member of the Dutch Masters and The True Sons of Thunder.

Jack Oblivian also did some work with Impala and currently plays with his band the Tearjerkers. Other bands Yarber has been, or is a member of since the demise of the Oblivians and the Compulsive Gamblers include: Tav Falco & The Unapproachable Panther Burns, Knaughty Knights, South Filthy, The Cool Jerks, The Limes and the Natural Kicks.

Jack and Greg Oblivian also played together in the Compulsive Gamblers, a somewhat more conventional garage rock / Rhythm and blues band.

Greg went on to form The Reigning Sound, in addition to being an in-demand producer for the likes of Mr. Airplane Man and The Deadly Snakes. He has recently produced and written much of the material for an album by Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las which will soon be released by Norton Records.
