Obergurgl is a village in the Sölden commune of the Ötztal Alps, in the Austrian Tyrol. With approximately 400 year-round inhabitants, it is mainly a tourist resort.
Obergurgl became famous in 1931, when Auguste Piccard was forced to land on a nearby glacier (Großer Gurgler Ferner) during his historic balloon flight, during which he was the first man to fly into the stratosphere.
The village has an elevation of 1930m and is the highest parish in Austria. It forms part of the ski resort area of Gurgl/Hochgurgl and lies at the southern end of the Ötztal/Gurglertal, the longest side valley off the Inn Valley (Inntal). It is a popular walking area during the summer.
