[edit] Deletion of Taipei Message Boxes

The Taipei situation is different than most sister cities. The Taipei agreement is a formal and signed agreement of mutual promotion. That is what message boxes provide, associations or grouping that don't neccesarily belong in the main article. Each city is unique in that it is a Sister City of Taipei and has a connection to each other through the agreement signed. I might agree to help you revert the edits but, I am not yet convinced that your opinion is the correct one. Please contiue this discussion at my talk page. Even if your revert are complete, please still contact me as we have not yet reached an understanding, positive or negative towards the inclusion of the message boxes. I will give you ample time to respond before making a decision about your edits. However, if I am unble to contact you and thus a mutual understanding is not reached, I may add the message boxes back.

P.S. For future reference, deleting a message box is not a minor edit. :)

-JCarriker 04:11, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC) Talk
Unfortunately, I am taking a wiki-holiday as of today to concentrate on a non-controversial topic; in part because I too am tired. Perhaps the Sister City message box was not a good idea, then again maybe it was. I no longer have the will to explore the issue. If you want to revert the edits, I won't stand in your way. In the U.S. Southern dialect (over fifty million people speak this dialect) the phrase Come on is a derrogatory remark; it implies the postion and intellect of the person being adressed is inferior to the speaker/writer's. You may want to consider using different wording in the future.
-JCarriker 08:18, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC)
I'm sorry I gave you the impression that you had contributed to my decision to take a holiday. You haven't please don't think that you have. I informed you of the meaning in the dialect, because I hope you will take it into account. I have found that people at wikipedia are much more responsive to criticism when the wording is diplomatic, you can find suggestion at wikiquette.
JCarriker 17:48, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC)
I have decided to end my holiday prematurely because I reached a decison earlier than I expected. I will revert all of the message box edits except at Taipei tommorrow, I'm up too late now. I would like to apologize for loosing my composure. I cannot stress enough that I had already scheduled the holiday before your edits and that you were not the sole cause of it. The message box was not one of my better edits but, please bare in mind that in the past week I have lost electricity twice and faced straight line winds in excess 100 kph in four seperate storms. I've had to take shelter in a closet from a storm a total of 25 times in my life, 6 of which were in the past week.
Please, read wikiquette if you haven't already. It offers suggestions on wording and even why it is important to discuss an edit before reverting. The fault for my response lies with me. However, please consider that I would not have responded the way that I did if you had worded your edit summary differntly and hadn't reverted hours of work without discussing your concerns with me beforehand.

[edit] Reese Witherspoon edits

There is an anonymous user, currently operating from IP 205.188.116.20, who has repeatedly (at least 8 times, operating from various IP addresses, in the past couple of days.

I don't want to engage in a protracted edit war with this user, but I notice that you've also taken part in the reverting of this page. Can you offer any suggestions as to next steps that I should take, as I think the consensus is that the image link isn't appropriate.

Thanks!

Kenwarren 01:10, Jul 16, 2004 (UTC)

yes put nude pix of male politcols as well check the history on the John Kerry election page

As far as I know, there is no culture where a presentation of genitals as a direct reference to a person isn't considered intentionally insulting and demeaning. So your point isn't well-taken in this case.
That said, in response to Nyh, it happens that the image is real. Reese appeared nude in the movie Twilight.

about the offensive links why do we want to offend readers are we going to than remove any "anti Bush" or "anti Kerry" or anti whoever. if the arguement because we can not a link to something that might "offended" readers who is going to decide what might offended people. Some people might be less offended by a nude pix of a star as oppose to a link comparing a current poltical leader to say Hitler ( I do not know if any of those exist currently) but I seem to recall there was a link to the smirking chimp on the current US Pres comparing him to a monkeying

[edit] Category:Israel-Palestine Geography

Apparently this seems difficult for people to believe, but I actually shifted to this category name out of an attempt at NPOV. The politics of the geography of Israel and the Palestinian territories are so charged that it seems impossible to separate them into separate issues. There are even so many people who outright deny the existence of Israel or the existence of Palestine. So, Israel-Palestine is a commonly-used neutral term to regard to the geographical region in general, as well as the overlapping social aspects (Arab Israeli towns, Jewish settlements, etc.). In the case of the category and its use in places such as Haifa, "Israel-Palestine" is a geographical term, not a political one. The political question is terribly terribly messy. - Gilgamesh 12:59, 22 July 2004 (UTC)

I moved my own discussion with Gilgamesh to User talk:Gilgamesh. Thanks for "hosting us", Nyh. --Woggly 06:55, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Votes

PLEASE, do not spam me with messages asking me to vote for deletion, adminship, etc. If I run across issues that I feel I know the details of and can get involved - I will. I will not vote for a random issue I am not involved in, just because you asked me.

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Constant improvement, or rot

Agree with you.

I think the only way is to have software support for stable pages (like those after features article). I have yet to see push from Wikipedians for such solution. Perhaps you may write article into Signpost about your experience. Pavel Vozenilek 19:31, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rejection of Tanakh

Hello Nyh: Please see and vote at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 December 12#Category:Hebrew Bible at [1] where it is beeing suggested that the word "Tanakh" is "not neutral", and I am trying to explain to them that it is in keeping with NPOV to convey the way Judaism uses certain terms to describe the Hebrew Bible/Tanakh. Thanks. IZAK 18:01, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Donabate2.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Donabate2.png. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:28, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Donabate.png)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Donabate.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that your image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If your image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why your image was deleted. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:28, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arbor Day

I would like to see this page explaining the reason this day is called "Arbor" day, from Latin Arbor = tree (I think). Why wasn't it given an English name? Why has this Latin name stuck? Nyh 09:07, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

I know nothing on this topic in particular, but I presume it's because it sounds more sophisticated. -- Zanimum 17:54, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
