[edit] Welcome!

Welcome, OMEN! EVOCATIVEINTRIGUE TALKTOME | EMAILME | IMPROVEME 12:31, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, for your welcomes. It is my deepest hope to be a sincerely dedicated and worthy member of this project. I am actually a little worried about the things I have posted so far :-). I am also hoping for some meesages, in which someone could tell exactly how I am doing so far. Also, my current "to do" things are: finish the Military history of Brazil article, and also to create an article on the Pernambucan Revolution of 1817. I also plan to try to translate articles from the Portuguese Wikipedia concerning Brazilian history.

Thanks again, I hope I am doing well. OMEN 03:01, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh, I also want to inform you all that I eventually plan to set up a user page - at first I did not, but I think I may be a more permanent user.OMEN 03:02, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
Great, have fun editing! :-) --Andeh 03:04, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I also want to participate in the article deletion debates and RfAs, but I am afraid I haven't editted enough to start giving any two cents :-). I think I'll set up a user page only UNTIL I get c. 1000 edits. Thanks again. OMEN 03:08, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Listing of AfD nominations in the daily log page

When you want to list a new AfD page using {{afd3}} (during step 3 of the AfD process), please add it to the daily log for the current day in Wikipedia time. The foolproof way to ensure that it ends up correct is to go to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion after you do step 2, and then click the "Add a new entry" link under "Current discussions" heading.

I noticed this because you added 2 AfDs meant for today's log into yesterday's log. I will not relist them on today's log since it is only a one day difference (and there's no need for you to correct it either, since it's a very small mistake), but please add new AfDs to the correct day in step 3 for future discussions. Thanks! Kimchi.sg 07:07, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, I will be more careful in the future. But I still don't quite understand what you are talking about. ;-) OMEN 17:19, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Thank you for awarding me the barnstar. I really appreciate it! Thanks very much. Best Regards, Signaturebrendel 19:33, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem, I also added a {{POV}} tag to the article, until the dispute is resolved. OMEN 19:34, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK nomination

You didn't nominate Confederation of the Equator correctly, so I fixed it for you. You can find it at the bottom of the June 28 section, here. OzLawyer 20:16, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. OMEN 21:42, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Encyclopedist

He had a request for adminship start to turn against him, then he withdrew the request and vanished for a few weeks.

Then one of the people who opposed his adminship started getting a series of fairly vile vandalism of his user and talk pages from one-use sock puppets many, many times a day. After several days of this a Check-User was performed on the sock puppet parade and identified Encyclopedist as the vandal. The underlying IP was blocked to stop it.

A few days later Encyclopedist returned and wrote a fairly vitriolic diatribe against the user he had been vandalizing, and the project in general. He also admitted that he had been one of the "named" vandals at one point, using his university computers. I forget which vandal at this point. He also said we might as well block him. So I did. He then insisted on having his User and Talk pages deleted.

A few weeks after that he returned once more and, using IP accounts and socks let it be known that he was moving to a place where he would have access to a huge number of IPs, making it very difficult to stop him if/when he decided to vandalize once more. He also warned that he had a big, sample attack on the project planned for the next day. The next day came, and instead of an attack he copied a "final" farewell letter onto the talk pages of pretty much everyone who had been connected to him in the past month or two of adventures.

And he's been silent since. At this pointif he returned, truely contrite for his actions, I might be willing to block him. OTOH, he made the point several times that he could easily just register a new account and start over. And that's true. I'm in no hurry to hunt him down if he does that, and resumes good contributing. I mostly have a problem when he goes into vandal mode.

So that's the breif version of what went down, at least from the side of things I saw, and where things currently stand. - TexasAndroid 01:01, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

This is very unfortunate. Perhaps if I could contact him, I could get him to apologize. I wish I had some help - it's sad that this happened, considering that he was, I assume. a good contributor? OMEN 03:03, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Personal "to do" list

Create article on *Pernambucan Revolt of 1817, finish Military history of Brazil. OMEN 03:38, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Military history of Brazil

It's quite nice (although I usually prefer to write—or rewrite—the lead section after the bulk of the article is complete). The only real issue I can see is the mention of tribal warfare; there doesn't seem to be a skeleton section for that. Are you planning to add any material discussing this topic? (If not, it's rather confusing to mention it in the introduction and never return to it.) Kirill Lokshin 04:03, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Most certainly, however, I haven't added a section due to a general lack of reliable information - if I cannot, I may delete the mention of it. Currently, I am writing an article on the 1817 Pernambucan Revolt, I do appreciate your comments. OMEN 04:07, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
Ah, ok. Keep up the good work; this is definitely an area of Wikipedia that needs all the attention it can get. Kirill Lokshin 04:09, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
Image:WikiThanks.png Thank you very much for the barnstar! Kirill Lokshin 06:08, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
Looks good. Is there any information available on the actual military actions involved? Or were there no major battles in the revolt? Kirill Lokshin 06:28, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to the Military history WikiProject!

The obligatory boilerplate message that all new members get... ;-)

Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines outline some things to include.
  • Interested in working on a more complete article? The military history peer review and collaboration departments would welcome your help!
  • Interested in a particular area of military history? We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, or periods.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every military history article in Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill Lokshin 06:30, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pernambucan Revolt

Looks good. Is there any information available on the actual military actions involved? Or were there no major battles in the revolt? Kirill Lokshin 06:28, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Information on the military activity in the revolt is, unfortunately, scarce. The only real major battle, to my knowledge, was the final siege that caused the revolt and the proclaimed republic to collapse. Information on the battles, casualties, and such is extremely difficult to find, and, perhaps, impossible. Thank you, for guiding a new Wikipedian through this! I did source all of the work from the article, and hopefully another author will come and take over. On a related not I added myself to the members list of Wikipedia's military history project. I hope to be a constructive editor - and again I thank you for you time that you have taken with me. Image:WikiThanks.png OMEN 06:34, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
You're quite welcome. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Kirill Lokshin 06:38, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm not really sure what the current WP:GA criteria are, actually (they tend to change rapidly and with little warning). I would just go to that page and nominate the article; if there are any points that need to be fixed, the regulars there will probably be in a better position to point them out. Kirill Lokshin 06:52, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your article, Confederation of the Equator, was selected for DYK!

Updated DYK query On July 2, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Confederation of the Equator, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

[edit] Substituting templates

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. —Whomp [T] [C] 23:03, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Daft Punk article

The reason why a lot of the trivia on the Daft Punk article was removed because the article doesn't need trivia of when every instance of a Daft Punk song being used. It seems excessive. Hope you can understand. Keep on Wikipeding! Douglasr007 05:56, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tire iron article

Hello. Why did you add a "wikify" tag to the tire iron aricle? What layout changes do you think need to be made to the page? I'm new here, but it looks okay to me. Thanks.Doctormatt 06:26, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I am still a new user :-) Perhaps I added the {{wikify}} tag to the wrong article. Have you seen the Recent changes list? [edit] Many thanks

Many thanks for the barnstar my friend, I'm glad the advice was helpful. A further comment regarding the same article, the references you give are much, much, much better than no references at all, but if possible, english language references would be most helpful to anyone who wishes to find out additional information (especially for things like school projects) that only understands english .... like me :). [edit] August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

[edit] ED

Hi NOVO-REI, I saw your edits to Phaedriel's talk page. I'm sure NoSeptember will get back to you, but in the meantime you might want to see this: User_talk:Springeragh#ED. --Allen 03:41, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Many Wikipedians have articles about them at that site, and ED editors have been persistent in leaving links to them on user talk pages here. It is a not so subtle way to spam attacks against WP editors and must not be encouraged. Links to ED attack articles should be reverted on sight, whether left by an ED troll or an someone unaware of the situation. The targeted editors are already aware of the articles about them, and ED has been clear that they will not remove these attacks, so the least we can do is not publicize them. If you think someone does not know about an attack site about them, notify them privately (email), instead of posting it on their quite visible talk page. NoSeptember 10:40, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My take on Encyclopedist

He edited regularly right up until his second run for adminship (first under the name Encyclopedist) on March 12/13, 2006. Just three hours after he started his run, in light of strong opposition by John Reid, he withdrew the nomination with the edit summary (in Portuguese) "I will not come back here again. I said that I was tired, so I sleep. Good night, Wikipedia" [2] and stopped editing under that name for a while (although he did make some anonymous edits as 65.35.196.0 (talk contribs) and 65.32.158.193 (talk contribs)). In early May, after he was detected by CheckUser as the puppeteer behind the John Reid sock attack (which led to the latter IP being blocked indefinitely), he confessed to that vandalism spree and asked to be blocked indefinitely, which TexasAndroid did.

Later, he apologized for his vandalism in late May, using the account MyApology (talk contribs). In early July, perhaps inspired by this, he apologized again and successfully asked to be unblocked. However, once unblocked, he went straight to running for adminship again (twice), receiving no supporting votes. Of course, we all know what happened after that...

IMO, I think he was right in apologizing and later asking to be unblocked, but I think he should have waited at least a year before attempting to run for adminship again. I believe if he had put off his admin aspirations and returned to regular editing of articles, he probably would still be among us today. I also think it was good for someone to inspire him to apologize and return, but that person should have told him to go back to regular editing of articles instead of rushing to become an admin.

I believe the best hope for him would be to communicate with him via non-English-Wiki setting (e-Mail, IRC, mailing list, etc.) and to persuade him to put off his admin aspirations for a while and go back to regular editing of articles instead. He has user accounts at es, fr, and pt, so you could try to communicate with him in those places. However, I don't know whether he still reads those pages or not, nor do I know whether or not he still cares. Aside from that, I don't know what else to do, since his e-Mail function doesn't work, he might not be aware of (or doesn't know how to use) IRC, mailing list, etc., and I can't search the directory of his university (University of South Florida) since the students' e-mail directory is protected there. [edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
