Nicholas O'Shaughnessy

Nicholas Jackson O'Shaughnessy is a Professor of Marketing and Communication at Brunel University (UK)[1], though he is due to take up a post at Queen Mary, University of London in January 2007. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and has previously been a Professor at Keele University and a Fellow of Hughes Hall, Cambridge University[1]. He also holds postgraduate degrees from Cambridge University, Oxford University, where he was president of the Oxford Union debating society, and Columbia University, in New York[1].
In 1983 he stood for election as a MP in the general election for Swansea East[1] losing to the incumbent Donald Anderson. In 1995 he wrote five reports on political communication, commissioned by the then Prime Minister John Major[1].
O'Shaughnessy is the author of a number of books including The Phenomenon of Political Marketing (1990) and Politics and Propaganda, Weapons of Mass Seduction (2004)[1]. His most recent work looks at the role of emotion in marketing and seeks understanding as to why advertising persuades[2].
