Initially known as Scribner High School, it opened in 1853 as the first high school in New Albany, Indiana. The school was operated on an irregular basis, and closed for years at a time. During part of the Civil War the school building was leased to the federal government, to be used as a hospital for Union soldiers. Continuous operation of a school has occurred since 1864 (though in varying locations). The final current location of the school was established in 1928.
