Nabih Youssef

Nabih Youssef received a B.S. in Structural Engineering from Cairo University in 1967. In 1971, he received his M.S. from California State University, Los Angeles, and in 1974 completed a postgraduate Diploma in Earthquake Engineering from UCLA. In addition to a prolific professional career, Nabih has taught at universities for over 20 years and is constantly entrenched in public and professional service duties. Mr. Youssef chaired the Seismic Safety Committee for the Governor's California Buildings Standards Commission and the City of Los Angeles’ Mayor's Blue Ribbon Seismic Hazard Reduction Committee. His positions as Past Chair of the Vision 2000 committee and the Seismology Committee for the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) heavily contributed to the enactment of performance-based design, a major conceptual breakthrough for the structural engineering community. He also serves on the Peer Review Board for the State Seismic Program and is a Fellow in the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Mr. Youssef founded the structural engineering consulting firm of Nabih Youssef & Associates (NYA) in 1989, an internationally recognized structural engineering firm with offices in Los Angeles, Irvine, and San Francisco. NYA has engineered high rise buildings, research labs and medical centers, adaptive re-use structures, and historical preservations. NYA’s landmark projects include the Skirball Cultural Center, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles City Hall, the Washington D.C. Convention Center, the Cleveland Museum, Los Angeles Coliseum, the Getty Villa Museum, and the new San Francisco Center. His company has been the recipient of numerous awards and publicity for their innovative structural systems.
