Municipality - major administrative unit of Lithuania, which has it's own council, elected by people, and mayor, elected by the council. Municipalities can either cover one major cities (city municipality) or entire regions (district municipality or just municipality).
Size of municipalities varies from 9 square kilometers (Visaginas city municipality) to 2218 square kilometers (Varėna district municipality). Population of municipalities varies from 2,408 (Neringa - a resort municipality) to 553,232 (Vilnius city municipality).
