Mud March (Suffragists)

The Mud March was the name given to an event staged by the NUWSS in February 1907 where women marched in support of giving women the right to vote in the United Kingdom.
The event became known as the 'Mud March' because of the terrible weather in which the women marched. At the time it was the largest ever open air demonstration and it came as a response to the militant tactics which the WSPU were starting to use. Around 3000 women from 40 different organisations took part in the march. The march had an impact because of the novelty of seeing respectable women taking part in a protest march.
