[edit] Plot synopsis
In a garage, an unidentified man kills a garage attendant and breaks the right hand of Warren Kemp, a stock analyst. Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) calls Monk (Tony Shalhoub) and Natalie (Traylor Howard) to investigate.
Monk goes undercover in Warren Kemp's office, since he suspects the killer being one of the office workers there. Monk makes easily friends in the office, since his organizational skills are quite handy when it comes to doing the same work over and over again. A potential suspect shows up, too: Chilton Handy holds a grudge against Warren Kemp.
Instead of eating lunch with Natalie, Monk hangs out with his new colleagues, while Natalie visits Warren Kemp in his office and flirts with him. There, she sees Monk sitting in the restaurant just opposite Warren Kemp's window - and he seems to enjoy himself.
After lunch, Monk goes bowling with his new friends: the other team belongs to Chilton Handy, who is supected to have broken Warren Kemp's hand to win the bowling tournament. Unfortunately, Handy has an alibi. During that night, Warren Kemp's interior decorator is murdered.
The next day, having lunch with Natalie, Monk solves the case: He deduces by something Natalie does, that the man, sitting on a table near them, can read other people's lips. He used Warren Kemp's window to look into his office and read Warren's stock secrets right from his lips. The interior decorator rearranged Kemp's office, so the killer couldn't read Kemp's lips anymore, so he broke his hand to make him use the left one - the view to Warren's lips is no longer obscured. And the garage attendant just got into the way, while the interior designer had to die for her plans of putting up curtains that would have blocked the lip reader's view.
Monk saves the case and leaves the office.
