Your Monobook.js is a special tool that can be used to help you with Wikipedia. It is confusing when you begin, but with practice, you can begin to make sense of it.
Monobook can only be used by editors that use the default monobook skin. Depending upon the current skin, the JavaScript file will be different:
- Classic skin: standard.js
- Cologne Blue: cologneblue.js
- Chick: chick.js
- Simple: simple.js
- Nostalgia: nostalgia.js
- MySkin: myskin.js
[edit] What is Monobook?
Monobook.js is a script page used for customized Wikipedia usage. JavaScript is inserted into the monobook and it performs special tasks that would not be do-able otherwise. For example, scripts can be used to add find/replace textboxes or give rollback options that would normally only be accessible to administrators. There are scripts to customize everything, from default font style to custom buttons.
Scripts are user-written and programmed. There any many script-writers who provide many useful patches for an improved Wikipedia experience.
Your monobook.js and monobook.js can only be edited by you and administrators. Most users can only view the source of your monobook files; however, your Monobook's contents are available for everyone to see.

User:(username)/monobook.js... This is the path for your Monobook.js. It is critical that "monobook" (or the other names for other skins) is in lower-case; a script on the page "Monobook.js" will not affect anything.
When you first go to your Monobook, it will not be a page. This is OK. You need to create it.
You will see many other user's Monoboooks, and they will not look like yours.
But the most important thing to remember is that there is a header at the top of other Monobooks that goes along the lines of "Be sure to purge your cache before saving, press Ctrl+F5 in IE..." This header is not visible in yours! Do not try to insert the header in to make it appear! It will appear with the header to anybody else who reads it.
There are many script pages that you can copy the contents of. You can also use different scripts in conjuction with each other to accpomplish several things at once.
