Moine Thrust Belt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Moine Thrust is not a single thrust fault but a formation called a thrust belt. These are created when a plate collision forces layers of crust up and over other, perhaps younger strata. The discovery of the Moine Thrust in 1907 was a milestone in the history of geology as it was the first thrust belt discovered. It formed during the Caledonian orogeny of the Silurian Period between 410 and 430 million years ago as Scotland was compressed by tectonic movements. Thrust belts are now recognized as common features of orogenic mountain ranges across the world.
