From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miramar, Puerto Rico is an area located in Puerto Rico's capital city of San Juan.
Miramar is located on the south of the Old San Juan peninsula, east of most tourist attractions in San Juan, south of El Condado, and west of Isla Verde. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is relatively close by car; Isla Grande Airport is much closer.
Miramar is north of Cataño, Puerto Rico; the city of Cataño is closer from Miramar by sea than it is by car, and several ferries leave for Cataño daily. They sail from the nearby dock, also Puerto Rico's only cruise ship dock, in Old San Juan.
The famed Academia del Perpetuo Socorro is located in Miramar. Pedro Rosselló, who would later on become Puerto Rico's sixth popularly elected governor, graduated from there. Other famous Academia del Perpetuo Socorro alumni include Benicio del Toro and Raúl Juliá. In addition, there is a 23-story hotel in the area with a roof-top restaurant that resembles an air traffic control tower.
Miramar used to have an American military air base, which later became well known among sports fans for its weekly boxing shows. Some of them were televised live across the island and had some of the most important local boxers fighting.
