Michael Valpy

Michael Granville Valpy (born Toronto 1942) is an award-winning Canadian journalist and author. He is a regular columnist for the Globe and Mail newspaper where he made his reputation on both political and human interest stories. Through a long career at the Globe, he has been a reporter, Ottawa columnist, member of the editorial board, deputy managing editor, Africa based correspondent during the last years of apartheid and religious affairs columnist.
In 1966-1967, Valpy was a staff member for the shortlived Company of Young Canadians.
In the 2000 federal election, Valpy ran as a New Democratic Party candidate in the Toronto riding of Trinity—Spadina, against Liberal Party of Canada incumbent Tony Ianno. Although he had one of the party's best results in the province, he was not elected.
Valpy has been divorced twice, most recently from constitutional lawyer Deborah Coyne. He is the father of three children, each from different mothers. He has won three National Newspaper Awards, co-authored three books and has received an honorary doctorate from Trent University.
