In musical terminology, mezzoforte or mezzo forte is a dynamic level lower than forte and higher than mezzopiano. It is typically abbreviated to mf on most sheet music. Mezzo forte comes from the Italian: mezzo = half/middle, forte = strong.
In marching percussion, mezzo forte may refer to the height from which the percussionist is directed to strike the instrument. In this context, mf typically refers to a height of between 6 and 9 inches off of the drum, keyboard, or auxiliary percussion.
