Merve Kavakci

Merve Kavakci is a Turkish politician, who was elected as a Virtue Party deputy for Istanbul on April 18, 1999. On May 2, she was prevented from making her parliamentary oath because of her hijab - members of the Social Democratic People's Party heckled her for 45 minutes. She was eventually stripped of her Turkish citizenship, on the grounds that she had taken United States citizenship on March 5, 1999, and had not disclosed this when running for office in Turkey.
She has a degree in computer science obtained at the University of Texas at Dallas.
