Mega Man V (known as Rockman World 5 in Japan) is the fifth and last video game in the Game Boy Mega Man Classic subseries. The game follows the adventures of Mega Man as he battles mysterious robots from outer space. Mega Man V had additional Super Game Boy support, which allows the game played with a special color scheme and custom background.

[edit] Gameplay

This game is notable for breaking an established trend in Mega Man titles released for the Game Boy system. Prior to Mega Man V, Mega Man games on Game Boy featured four Robot Masters from their titular NES counterpart, as well as four Robot Masters from the sequel to the game's NES counterpart (in other words, Mega Man II on the Game Boy contained four Robot Masters from the NES's Mega Man 2, as well as four Robot Masters from the NES's Mega Man 3). Mega Man V, however, featured entirely original enemy characters referred to as Stardroids (in Japan, Space Rulers) rather than Robot Masters. The Stardroids were lead by Terra (Earth in Japan). The Stardroids are: Neptune, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Pluto, Uranus, Jupiter and Saturn.

After wiping out the first 4 Stardroids, the player must take on Dark Moon, a creation of Terra that very much resembles the Yellow Devil, before getting to the other 4 Stardroids. Terra awaits the player at the beginning of his/her journey to Dr. Wily.

This is one of, if not, the only games where Dr. Wily is not the final boss, despite the fact that the player does face him. The final boss is what Wily calls the ultimate weapon of destruction, known as Sunstar (in Japan, Sungod). This trend is seen again in Mega Man X8.

This game can be said to have closer ties to Mega Man 7 on the Super Nintendo, since the Mega Arm acts much like the Rocket Buster, an upgrade to the Rush Super Adapter. In addition, returning to levels to hunt down new items (such as the jewels that halve weapon energy requirements) was not a prevalent feature until Mega Man X and Mega Man 7.

[edit] Story

The game opens with Rock and his sister Roll strolling through a grassy field. Suddenly, they are confronted by a mysterious robot, who calls himself Terra, leader of the Stardroids. It seems as though he is after Mega Man for unknown reasons. Rock motions Roll to stand back as he transforms into his suit and helmet, becoming Mega Man. He attempts to fight Terra, only to find that his Mega Buster has no effect on the enemy. As a result, Mega Man is quickly defeated. Waking up in Dr. Light's lab (how he arrived there and why Terra did not destroy him is never explained), Mega Man is presented with two new items to help him defeat the Stardroids. First is the Mega Arm, an upgrade to the Mega Buster that allows him to fire his fist like a rocket. The second is a robotic cat named Tango, who can provide support by transforming into a buzzsaw.

With these new tools at his disposal, Mega Man is able to challenge the Stardroids. After defeating the initial eight Stardroids and their Devil-like minion Dark Moon, Mega Man is finally able to confront Terra for a rematch. Mega Man is victorious this time, however it is revealed that the Stardroids were constructed by Dr. Wily, who unveils an enormous space station as his current base.

Riding inside Rush, Mega Man penetrates the space station and begins his descent to its control room. Along the way, he is challenged by the Megaman Killers (Enker, Quint, Punk, and Ballade, all from the previous Game Boy titles) and the rebuilt Stardroids (minus Terra). Finally, after receiving a recovery item from his brother Proto Man, Mega Man confronts Dr. Wily. Defeating Wily's machine is not the end, however. The doctor reveals a powerful robot named Sunstar. It is explained that this robot is a relic from an ancient alien civilization that Wily discovered. Using it as a template, Wily was able to copy its design into the Stardroids, which accounts for their unusually powerful abilities. However, now that the Stardroids have been destroyed, Wily plans to use the original to defeat Mega Man.

However, after activating Sunstar, Wily is shocked to discover that the robot will not obey him. Refusing to follow his orders, Sunstar blasts Wily's UFO, badly damaging it and forcing the doctor to retreat. Unfortunately, Sunstar still plans on battling Mega Man. As a war machine, his sole purpose is to fight. After a vicious battle, Mega Man is able to defeat Sunstar. As he dies, Sunstar warns Mega Man, who was trying to convince him that robots don't have to fight, that when he explodes, it will most likely destroy the entire space station. Mega Man escapes as Wily's fortress explodes behind him.

Some time after the battle, Mega Man is found in the field that he originally encountered Terra in. His contemplative mood is broken, however, with the arrival of a familiar, yet battered UFO. Declaring that he will end the war himself, Wily attempts to attack, only to have his badly damaged craft explode, forcing the doctor to flee on foot, with Mega Man in close pursuit.

[edit] Stardroids

Unlike previous Game Boy games, the main bosses aren't taken from the NES games. Instead, brand new bosses are introduced. The following are listed in the order of the ending:

# Boss Robot Weapon Weakness
SRN-002 Mercury Grab Buster Salt Water, later Black Hole
SRN-003 Venus Bubble Bomb Photon Missile
SRN-004 Mars Photon Missile Salt Water
SRN-009 Neptune Salt Water Photon Missile, later Spark Chaser
SRN-005 Jupiter Electric Shock Bubble Bomb
SRN-006 Saturn Black Hole Electric Shock
SRN-008 Pluto Break Dash Grab Buster
SRN-007 Uranus Deep Digger Break Dash
SRN-001 Terra Spark Chaser Deep Digger
SRN-000 Sunstar none obtainable; he is the final boss Electric Shock/Spark Chaser

[edit] Trivia

  • This is the only classic Mega Man game where the final boss is not Dr. Wily.
  • Wily building the Stardroids using Sungod/Sunstar as template is almost analogous to a common theme in Mega Man X, as the Reploids were based on X.
  • As with the previous Game Boy installment, an upgrade for Mega Man's default weapon can be achieved by repeatedly dying and continuing until the player is warped back to Dr. Light's lab, where the upgrade is installed. Like Mega Man IV's upgrade, the weapon cannot be saved by a password feature, and is lost when the power is turned off. [1]
