M.D. Geist (装鬼兵MDガイスト Sokihei M.D. Geist?) is an anime and manga about a post-apocalyptic world. The series is extremely violent, often depicting graphic scenes of human dismemberment and evisceration.
Geist (the main character) is MD-02, a Most Dangerous Soldier, genetically engineered to function as a killing machine, but every one of the MDS units went homicidally insane; Geist was placed in suspended animation in a stasis pod orbiting the planet Jerra.
[edit] Synopsis
The Regular Army of the planet Jerra has been locked in a civil war with the rebellious Nextrum Army, who believe that Earth should not be involved in governing its extraterrestrial colonies. In response, the Jerran Army developed the Most Dangerous Soldiers, which turned out to work too well; the MDS units attacked everyone, including their allies.
Geist's stasis satellite falls planetside and he awakens. He is found by a group of pirates, and kills their leader. Vaiya, a female pirate, is attracted to Geist's strength, but Geist shows no desire for her. Eventually, Geist and Vaiya are captured by the Jerran Army and pressed into service to stop the Jerran doomsday weapon Death Force from activating.
Like a black knight, Geist is equipped with powered armour (which will become his trademark), and goes into the Brain Palace with a group of Jerran commandos. Rather than deactivate the Death Force, Geist sets it off, unleashing an army of machines that consume living matter to replicate, condemning all life on Jerra to death in order to have an enemy he can fight.
M.D. Geist is followed by a sequel, M.D. Geist II: Death Force, which takes place after the Death Force has decimated most of Jerra's population, leaving a small group under the protection of a warlord called Krauser. Krauser is another MDS unit, MD-01, who has a technology that hides his mobile fortress from the Death Force. When he encounters Geist, he enlists MD-02 in deploying a "Jignitz Bomb," designed to wipe out the Death Force.
Again, Geist's programming overrides any shred of humanity he may have, and he leads the Death Force off to Krauser's fortress, leaving his commandos to be destroyed in the Jignitz Bomb's detonation. Although most of the Death Force is consumed in the explosion as well, a large number of the machines fall upon Krauser's fortress, while Geist confronts Krauser himself. Geist kills Krauser in hand-to-hand combat, while the Death Force consumes most of the refugees.
[edit] Trivia
- Vaiya
Vaiya is around the only character who appears in both movies and is most likely the one who survived both.
She is with Geist when he activated the Death Force, then the viewer only hears a scream of her while seeing only a black screen. This scene was most likely used to let the viewer believe Geist killed her. However she reappears in the second movie as one of the survivors in a truck-like vehicle trying to find goods in destroyed cities. She is saved together with some other survivors by Krauser and recognizes him as an MD because of his golden necklace. When Geist later appears in the fortress, she makes a famous scene screaming: "He is the Angel of death here to kill us all!" Though Krauser initially defeats Geist and believes him slain, Vaiya continues to rant that he is a demon that will keep coming back to life to kill them all. Eventually, Krauser is forced to confine her to a cell due to her seemingly unstable mental state. The viewer again doesn't see her die, but at the end she is shown attempting to break out of her cell. Eventually, a cyborg who fought Geist earlier in the movie comes around the cell and hears her scream. She is last seen with the cyborg and a handful of other human refugees watching Krauser's fortress burn, without either Geist or the Death Force in sight. With Krauser dead and the Death Force presumably destroyed, no other worthy enemies exist for Geist to battle. The last sign we see of Geist is his empty helmet, lying in the ruins of Krauser's fortress.
- Geist Soul?
Even though he is called a soulless killing machine, it's not clear if Geist can really kill anyone, or if he is limited to just armed enemies or people that are a threat to him. In the second movie we see that Vaiya is still alive. However, a scene at the end of the first movie led the viewer to believe he killed her.
At the end of the second movie, during the last fight between Krauser and Geist, a young boy who saw Krauser as an idol is accidentally caught between the two. While Krauser stabs Geist and the boy with a larger metal pipe, Geist had stopped his attack shortly before the boy's head.
