Shortcut: WP:RETF

RegExTypoFix (Regular Expression Typographical error Fixer, or RETF) is a set of over 1500 regular expressions used to automatically fix common typos and misspellings. It is built into AutoWikiBrowser. Anyone who can use AutoWikiBrowser can use RegExTypoFix. It is also easily ported into any application that supports regular expression strings.

The lofty goal of RETF is to be completely automatic. That is, 100% accuracy. Some day it may be built into programs that want basic spellchecking without user input.

RETF is completely manually compiled. By spellchecking articles/talk pages with Microsoft Word, and seeing which typos are the most common then adding those. I can add about 35 new words an hour. Example of how it works:

The only interaction needed is to review the change and hit save. You can do other stuff while it loads the page in the background.

Currently "united kingdom" is being replaced with "United Kingdom", and that's fine except in cases not referring to the UK, like "the united kingdom of Israel" or, "the united kingdom of Italy". It's part of the "Communicate" regex under New Additions. I don't find that spelling in either of my big dictionaries. In the Andora article, the "comune" spelling is evidently Italian, so I changed "Comune di Andora" to "Commune of Andora".--BillFlis 13:17, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't have a problem with using only "publicly" here if it's considered the standard in both (all) Englishes, but this rule seems odd. The only one I can think of right now is ironic/ironically-- people don't say "ironical" anymore, if they ever did. (It is in the American Heritage and Merriam-Webster dictionaries though.) Maybe this isn't a good argument because "ironically" was formed when people did use "ironical", but I feel like there are other similar formations. OK, supposedly the adverbial form of "alcoholic" is "alcoholically", though I have no idea under what circumstances you'd use that. OK, this is helpful: -ical at dictionary.com. I've never heard "poetical" but the adverb is "poetically"; "economic" and "economical" have different meanings, but the adverb form of either is "economically"... etc. (Er, I should note almost all my experience is with American English.) --Galaxiaad 16:11, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

This issue keeps coming back. It's true that 'publically' is often seen on the internet, but then so are many misspellings. It is not acceptable in educated British English (in spite of what's said above), and my 1700-page Collins English Dictionary accepts only 'publicly'. I don't deny that there are one or two unreliable web-based resources that suggest that 'publically' is OK, but we ought to be more rigorous in this encyclopedia than simply to follow what someone happens to say on the web. Collins is a very authoritative source for British English. What does Websters say for US English?--MichaelMaggs 12:05, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

I think this fixes the attemp problem and combines all attempt typos into one. Do you see any properly spelled words it might mistakenly match?

Another possibility is: "\b(A|a)tt?em(p|t|pt)(|s|ed|ing)\b" --> "$1ttempt$3" which would include "atempt," but with the side effect of matching all proper spellings. —Mrkwcz 18:10, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

What do you think:

mHz is valid - means millihertz. It would be bad to change all millihertz to megahertz. Mattopia 14:00, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I think this would be OK, also avoiding any false positives:

\b([kMG])h[zZ]\b → $1Hz

\bK[hH][zZ]\b → kHz

\bg[hH][zZ]\b → GHz

The first one catches mainly the uncapitalized "H" (also the less-common error, cap "Z"). The others catch "K" and "g". Concerning millihertz, that's a very rare (very small) unit; I would check the factuality of its use in any article.--BillFlis 14:23, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
