Matulji is a municipality in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia. It lays 10km west of Rijeka, above the town of Opatija, and it borders with Slovenia. According to the 2001 census, there are 10,544 inhabitants in the area, 89.57% which are Croats.
The municipality is of a great transportation importance because of the major railway and road networks connecting Rijeka with Ljubljana and Triest to the west, and Pula to the south trough the tunnel Učka. Sixty five percent of the annual Croatian border traffic takes place through four international border crossings (Pasjak, Šapjane, Mune, and Lipa) within the Matulji.
The region is well known locally for its folklore, namely Zvoncari during the carnival festivities.
