Matthew Bloomer (born 3 November 1978 in Grimsby) is an English professional footballer, he is currently playing for Football League Two outfit Lincoln City, where he is one of their five longest serving players currently under tenure. He is by trade a centre back or right back, but can play anywhere, and is described by his manager at Lincoln as a ‘utility player.’ On the terraces at Sincil Bank, many see him as a player that can play in any position on the pitch, and has established himself as somewhat of a fan favourite.
Bloomer started his career as a trainee with his home town club of Grimsby Town, but failed to make an impact, starting only 3 games in his four years under contract, he then moved onto Hull City, where he had even less success, making just 3 appearances in the league in two years, all of them off the bench. His big break came in 2002, where Alan Buckley’s relegation threatened Lincoln City of Division 3 signed him on a month long loan, where he turned in a series of impressive displays at centre back which helped keep Lincoln in the Football League. The following season, Keith Alexander succeeded Alan Buckley as manager, and brought Matthew Bloomer in on a permanent deal.
Since he signed permanently for Lincoln, he has acted largely as a bit part player, but has made nearly a century of appearances for city. During the 2004-2005 season, he earned himself a starting place at the right back position. The right back that started the season was veteran Dean West, but with the team struggling to pick up results in the early stages of the season, and West failing to impress anyone, Bloomer was given the nod to start ahead of him for the League Cup first round match against Derby County. Lincoln won 3-1, Bloomer’s performance was highly praised, and he went onto make a number of solid performances. He lost his starting place following an ill-fated first half against Wycombe Wanderers in early 2005. Bloomer moved from right back to central defensive position held by inspirational captain Paul Morgan, who was out with an injury, Wycombe scored 3 goals in the first 45 minutes, all from Nathan Tyson, and two of them coming from Bloomer mistakes, the first a weak back header to goalkeeper Alan Marriott, intercepted and scored from by Tyson, the second, facing his own goal, he lost possession to Tyson, who closed in on goal and scored. He did not start again all season, with both Lee Beevers and Gareth Macaulay playing in his position for the rest of the year, however, he did come onto play up front in the play-off final in Cardiff, where Lincoln lost 2-0 after extra time to Southend United.
During the 2005-2006 season, Bloomer has found himself on the fringes of the Lincoln squad, and has had spells on loan at former club Grimsby and Conference outfit Cambridge United. He has since returned to Lincoln, where he is unlikely to return to the starting XI any time soon because of the strength of the current starters.
