The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University provides a nationally recognized academic forum for research and dialogue concerning all areas of applied ethics. The center engages faculty, students, and members of the community as well as its own staff and fellows in ethical discussions in a number of focus areas, including business, health care and biotechnology, character education, government, global leadership, technology, and emerging issues in ethics.
Established in 1986, the Center received seed funding and endowment money from Linda and A.C. "Mike" Markkula Jr. Now, after a successful capital campaign, the Center has an endowment in excess of $10 million and an annual operating budget of over $1.5 million.

[edit] William P. Laughlin Lectures on Global Leadership and Ethics
"The Global Leadership and Ethics program of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics sponsors a series of presentations by world leaders in various fields to advance the understanding of the role of ethics in international relations, to encourage global leaders to speak forcefully and effectively regarding ethical issues in global affairs, and to create an informed and productive dialogue on global leadership and ethics at Santa Clara University. This lecture series is named for William P. Laughlin, founder of Saga Foods Corp., and a lifelong advocate of global leadership and ethics." - official description Link
Recent presenters include: Jean Francois-Poncet, former French Minister of Foreign Affairs, France; Ketumile Masire, former president of the Republic of Botswana; Jamil Mahuad, former president of Ecuador; Hans Küng, president, Global Ethic Foundation; and Malcolm Fraser, former prime minister, Australia
[edit] Architects of Peace Project
The Architects of Peace Project is a permanent exhibit of over seventy portraits and biographies by photographer Michael Collopy of "architects of peace" throughout the world. The exhibit is accompanied by a website that includes essays by the architects and resources for educators in addition to online copies of the portraits on display.
The list of architects includes "diplomats, poets, scientists, and religious leaders." Other institutions that also provide a permanent home for the exhibit include: The National Civil Rights Museum, Marquette University, The Hoover Institute Archives at Stanford, and Anahuac University in Mexico City.
The university, Markkula Center, and photographer Michael Collopy also confer The Architects of Peace Award to one individual each year who has been a powerful force for peace in the world. Previous award winners include Mary Robinson and Marla Ruzicka.
[edit] Hackworth fellowships and grants
Thanks to the generosity of alumnus and Cirrus Logic chairman Michael Hackworth and his wife Joan, the Markkula Center now provides a number of faculty research grants and student fellowships each year. According to the Center, "the goal of the Hackworth Fellowships is to have Fellows promote ethical reflection and reflective ethical action among their undergraduate peers. In order to pursue this goal, Fellows are expected to develop their own programs in an area of interest to them. These programs can be on as wide a range of topics and use as wide a range of methods as are of interest to each Fellow." Fellows have recently pursued projects including: a discussion-based class on Ethics and Globalization; Islam and Students; Voting Behavior of SCU Students; Health Care Ethics Club; Student Radio Program; Research on Student Activism.
