Manchester Book Award
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Manchester Book Award is a project run in Manchester, U.K., organised by School Services at Manchester City Council's Library and Information Service; it is funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
A long list of twenty-four children's books was put forward by secondary-school pupils and publishers; books on this list had to have been standalone books (that is, not sequels) published between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005, written by authors living in the UK Reading groups then narrowed this to a short list of six. In January 2006, young people across Manchester started voting for their favourite, either on line in libraries; the deadline for voting was 10 March 2006.
The six short-listed finalists for the 2006 award were:
- Jimmy Coates: Killer by Joe Craig
- The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney
- Roxy's Baby by Catherine Macphail
- Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver
- Stuff by Jeremy Strong
- Gangsta Rap by Benjamin Zephaniah
The winner of the 2006 Manchester Book Award, which was announced at the award ceremony on 23 March 2006 at the City of Manchester Stadium, was Stuff by Jeremy Strong.
The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund has announced that the Manchester Book Award will run again in 2007.
