M.G. Sreekumar is a prominent playback singer in Malayalam and Tamil cinema.

M G Sreekumar needs no introduction. Malayalam music buffs have enjoyed his singing for well over a decade now and his popularity as a playback singer has only soared over the years. Though hailing from a family of eminent musicians (he’s the younger brother of noted music-director, vocalist M G Radhakrishnan and eminent musician Prof. Omanakutty), Sreekumar’s entry into the realm of film music was a sheer accident. But once there, his hard work and dedication coupled with his versatile voice saw him going places. Awards and recognition followed, though for Sreekumar the icing on the cake is the two National Awards he’s received in a gap of just 10 years. The latest being for Chaandu pottum from the film Vaasanthiyum, Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum .

His father, the late Malabar Gopalan Nair, was a harmonist and a classical vocalist during the post-independence era of the 50s. In those days there were no sophisticated audio or light systems as we have today. As a matter of fact, electricity itself was quite a luxury. For light, the performer would have to use noisy petromax lamps, and also had to sing loudly to reach the ears of thousands. But love for the art of music inspired his father with a commitment that established him as a musician of renown in the circles he moved. His mother who shared his love for music was also a music teacher who retired in the 60s and is now living with M.G Sreekumar. His father passed away in Trivandrum in 1973 when Sreekumar was quite young. But his life has always been an inspiration for Sreekeumar to achieve the goals he has set for himself. His father's passion for the art of music has encouraged him to seek greater perfection in all that he do. His brother, M. G. Radha Krishnan, who works at the Trivandrum chapter of the All India Radio as a Senior Music Director has done more than 100 films in Malayalam. His deep involvement in music has raised him to the level of an internationally famous music director. His sister, Dr.K.Omanakutty, is also no new-comer to this melodious art called music. She obtained her doctorate in Kathakali music in 1985 and has a number of music show-cuts that include artistes like K. S. Chitra, a leading play-back singer in the world of contemporary Malayalam films.
