Loyola College is a Jesuit college in Chennai, India. It is one of India's elite/prestigious colleges. The College offers courses in the arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and commerce. It is autonomous, but affiliated to the University of Madras, which grants the degrees.
It was founded in 1925 by a French Jesuit, Father Francis Bertram, with the support of a group of Jesuit priests who had had their grounding at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and the London School of Economics.
The College offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and was ranked the number-one college or institution for Science programmes in India by India Today in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. . The Arts stream includes subjects such as Economics, History, English, and Sociology. The College has also been placed in the top ten institutions in India for arts, sciences, and commerce.
The college follows a credit-based semester pattern, unlike most Madras University-affiliated colleges. Undergraduate students have to pass all examinations and obtain at least 90 credits in three years to be eligible for a degree. For non-academic credits, students can enroll in associations such as Rotaract and AICUF.
The college is located in a 88-acre campus in the heart of the city of Chennai. Its tree-lined pathways, steepled chapel, and sprawling grounds are a landmark in the southern metropolis. Its alumni also include a former President of India, the current Finance Minister of India, the current Information Technology Minister of India, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, several distinguished foreign and civil service servants as well.
The college has been conferred the "College with Potential For Excellence" by the University Grants Commission. It was also given a Rs.10 Million grant (1 Crore) in 2006 by the UGC for the continual improvement of the college.
