"Love Machine" is second single from Girls Aloud's second album What Will the Neighbours Say?. It charted at #2 in the UK in September of 2004, and was their first single in the UK download chart. It managed a peak of #6 on the Download Chart.
Many believe this should have been another #1 for the girl group as it has become a dancefloor anthem and is one of their most recognisable hits to date. It was also nominated of 'Record of The Year 2004'.
Interestingly, the band tried to stop this being released as they thought the beginning of the song would irritate people. It has since become one of their favourite singles to perform.
The demo of "Love Machine" is included in a Popjustice compilation album. This version contains most of the parts sing by Cheryl Tweedy and almost every line different from the actual song.
The b-side, "Androgynous Girls", has become a fan favourite of the group.
"Love Machine" has sold in excess of 100,000 copies. The single sold 36,000 copies in its first week of release.
The song has been covered by 3 other artists.
[edit] Music video
The video for "Love Machine" takes place in the fictitious Eskimo Club, a nightclub which the band members, dressed for a night on the town, enter. Though Cheryl initially sets her eye on a musician at the club, the girls make their way to a table. However, they are soon distracted by the men in the Eskimo Club and the tricks they pull to try to get the girls' attention. In a separate setting of a dark background and flashing lights, the girls begin to dance, and eventually they release their inhibitions and begin dancing in the Eskimo Club as well.
