London Underground S Stock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article discusses the new London Underground S Stock. For the original 'S Stock' see London Underground S Stock (ex-Metropolitan Railway).
The S Stock is a class of sub-surface train currently under construction by Bombardier for the London Underground to replace ageing A60 and A62 Stock on the Metropolitan Line, C69 and C77 Stock on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and District Lines (Edgware Road-Wimbledon) and D78 Stock on the District Line.
The 'S' designation stands for 'Space,' which refers to a series of improvements over older London Underground subsurface stock; most notably, the ability to walk the entire length of the train (all other stock has a set of doors between each carriage which are only to be used in emergency). The type should enter service in around 2009 and will also feature air conditioning throughout - the sub-surface tunnels being able to displace the exhausted hot air.
S Stock will not be used for the extended East London Line, as the ELL is being transferred to London Overground. Instead it will be worked using a new batch of Class 376 units. [1]
