Some questions...

• Rome, Wisconsin - the disambiguation page has two real places thus named. Is the one in this list definitely not meant to be one of them?
• Gormenghast (I've thought about reading the books but have never got round to it) - according to the article, "a fictitious castle". Is it also a city, town, or village? If not, it shouldn't be in the list...

I'd argue that Sleepy Hollow, New York - in Washington Irving's short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" doesn't belong here.

• The Legend of Sleepy Hollow takes place in Tarry Town. Sleepy Hollow is the name given (in that work of fiction) to a glen, not a city.
• The place name Sleepy Hollow can be traced back to 1655, when Adriaen Van der Donck called the area around the Pocantino River Slapershaven, of which Sleepy Hollow is an anglicization. This predates its use in 1819 by Washington Irving to describe the area by some considerable degree.
• While no town of Sleepy Hollow existed in 1819, Tarrytown (which did exist and which was mentioned in the story) changed its name to Sleepy Hollow in 1996. -- Someone else 21:16 19 May 2003 (UTC)

Some cities appear grouped together at the end (eg from Cthulhu mythos). Should the same happen to the various cities from Middle-Earth, etc> Phil 17:53, Nov 6, 2003 (UTC)

How well-known need the fictional cities be? I can think of plenty of relatively obscure entries from my library (in the worlds of Robin McKinley, Julian May, or Elizabeth Willey for example), but I'd be surprised if any of these were properly WP material. 18.24.0.120 05:33, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Certainly nothing from the first two of those authors would count as too obscure (Elizabeth Willey doesn't ring an immediate bell with me but I'm sure there's plenty of more literate people out there :-). Since this might be the only place on Wikipedia these cities get mentioned, the bext thing is probably to add them to the list and see whether anything develops. --Phil 08:13, Feb 9, 2004 (UTC)

Would Genoa City be a fictional city? I added it. There is a real Genoa City, Wisconsin and that is where The Young and the Restless is set, but the writers of the show have made it clear that they share a name and that is it. Mike H 01:45, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)

A suggestion: it might make this article more effective and easily browsable if it was ordered by country/region/state/whatever rather than in a pure alphabetical format. -Branddobbe 05:47, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)

Not really: if someone is looking for a city listed here, they will want it sorted by the name of the city. If they want the country/region/state/whatever they can go to the appropriate article for that. --Phil | Talk 14:05, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)

This assumes that:

1. All fictional cities are used within the context of a state.
2. Readers will know what state a given fictional city is in.

It also does not address:

1. Do real states get mixed in with imaginary states?
2. Do states get mixed in at the same level with countries and regions when there is no state or county etc.?
3. Will we list every imaginary state and country where there is only one city in each one?
