[edit] The Marsh Family

[edit] Randy and Sharon Marsh

Randy and Sharon (originally "Carol") Marsh are the parents of Stan, and his exceptionally violent sister Shelley. Sharon Marsh is a receptionist at Tom's Rhinoplasty and Randy is a geologist. During his younger years Randy was a member of a briefly successful boy band "Ghetto Avenue Boys" and retains a penchant for singing and dancing. Randy frequently displays impulsiveness and irrationality, summed up well in the ability to take something 'too far', time and again. There are several episodes in which he features as a main character. He tends to be a leader in one of the groups of citizens when they protest or fight each other, usually the side representing the "Democrat" point of view (i.e I'm A Little Bit Country).

[edit] Stan Marsh

Main article: Stan Marsh

Stanley "Stan" Marsh is one of the central characters in the animated television series South Park. Voiced by series co-creator Trey Parker, Stan and Kyle Broflovski often trade places as the 'leader' of the four main characters. Stan is arguably the most normal of the kids, and is generally honest, very mature for his age, and well-meaning. He is somewhat more assertive than his best friend Kyle.

[edit] Shelley Marsh

Main article: Shelley Marsh

Shelly is a violent twelve-year-old with an awkward set of headgear braces. She enjoys watching "Friends", listening to Britney Spears records, dating older men, beating up Stan, and calling him and his friends "turds." Despite the mutual dislike between Shelly and the boys, she and Eric Cartman formed a cease-fire in the episode "Cat Orgy" and get back at Shelly's boyfriend, Skyler, who is twenty-two years old and was only dating her for sex (she refused and he dumped her).

[edit] Grampa Marsh

Main article: Grampa Marsh

"Grampa" Marvin Marsh is the elderly patriarch of the Marsh family, and lives with the Marsh family. He is 102 years old and confined to a wheelchair. He is somewhat senile and calls Stan "Billy". He has been referred to as both Sharon and Randy's father. Grampa has frequently wanted Stan to kill him.[citation needed]

[edit] Jimbo Kern

Main article: Jimbo Kern

Stan's uncle Jimbo Kern, Randy's half brother, represent South Park's large population of stereotypical "hicks". Him and his sidekick Ned Gerblansky are obsessed with large trucks, beer, guns, explosions, and killing animals. They detest "liberals" and circumvent anti-hunting laws by yelling "it's coming right at us!" before shooting any animal, thereby justifying the kill as self defense.

Jimbo and Ned met while in the Vietnam War, where Jimbo was a helicopter pilot.

[edit] The Broflovski Family

[edit] Gerald and Shiela Broflovski

Gerald is the father and head of the family. His occupation as a lawyer has given him high status in profile cases such as in episodes like Sexual Harassment Panda and Chef Aid. As The Simpsons's character Ned Flanders satirizes Christian fundamentalism, Gerald Broflovski satirizes Jewish fundamentalism.

Sheila is Gerald's wife and the matriarch of the family. She is often noted for (and sometimes notoriously remembered) her political correctness and strong belief in moral values. Sheila often pushes her son Kyle to "always do the right thing" and abstain from immorality. Viewers can see her strong belief in her principles especially in South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. She maybe a satirization of the conservative side of the political spectrum.

[edit] Kyle Broflovski

Main article: Kyle Broflovski

Kyle is the central character in the family. He is one of the show's four main children along with Stan, Cartman, and Kenny (though Butters was elevated to main character status since Butter's Very Own Episode). Kyle tends to be the most logical, rational, and reasonable boy among the four. He often abstains from certain fads exeplified in Chinpokomon and South Park is Gay!.

[edit] Ike Broflovski

Main article: Ike Broflovski

Ike Broflovski is Kyle's adopted baby brother and a Canadian, indicated by his trademark flapping ovoid head. He is the ball in Kyle's game of "Kick the Baby." Ike speaks in baby talk, but sometimes speaks profanely, often due to the influence of his brother. Ike watches "The McNeil Lehrer NewsHour" weeknights from 10-11 pm and reads John Steinbeck novels contributing to his status as a genius.

[edit] The Cartman Family

[edit] Liane Cartman

Main article: Ms. Cartman

Cartman's mom, Liane Cartman, is famous in South Park for being sexually promiscuous. She was at one point the featured model on the cover of Crack Whore Magazine. Young Eric denies this allegation made by Stan and Kyle in many episodes. In South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut it was revealed that she takes part in German 'scheiße movies'. It was revealed in the episode Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut, that she is a hermaphrodite, and is actually Cartman's biological father. The identity of Cartman's biological mother has never been revealed.

[edit] Eric Cartman

Main article: Eric Cartman

Eric Cartman, voiced by Trey Parker, is a fictional character in the animated series South Park. He is one of the four central characters. Cartman is arguably the most well-known and recognizable character of South Park. Cartman is the most rude and self-centered and constantly torments Kyle for being Jewish.

[edit] Extended Cartman Family

The extended Cartman family is shown in the episode "Merry Christmas Charlie Manson!", where he and the others go on a trip to Nebraska to visit them for Christmas. Most of his relatives appear to be similar in matter to him; all fat, with the same speech impedement and catchphrases. The family is seen again in the episode "Cartmanland" at his grandmother's funeral — where she leaves her estate (valued at $1,000,000) to Eric, citing that all the other family members would have spent it all on crack. His grandparents' names are Harold and Mabel, and has uncles named Howard and Stinky.

[edit] The McCormick Family

[edit] Mr. and Mrs. McCormick

Kenny's family, the McCormicks, are exceptionally poor, and are depicted as being stereotypical "white trash". A typical daily meal in this family would consist of frozen waffles with no side dishes. Kenny's father, Stuart, was a high school friend of Gerald Broflovski. He is an alcoholic, a fact that Cartman never lets Kenny forget. Kenny's mother, whose first name has never been mentioned, was only sixteen years old when she had Kenny. The McCormicks are too poor to buy and own a house, instead living in a run-down shack that Stuart and Gerald built as a hideaway when they were teenagers.

[edit] Kenny McCormick

Main article: Kenny McCormick

Kenneth "Kenny" McCormick', voiced by Matt Stone (and, on one occasion, Mike Judge), is a fictional character in the animated series South Park. He is one of the four central characters, all of whom are nine-year old boys. (The characters were eight years old in the earlier episodes.)

He is well-known for almost always wearing an orange parka, and for being killed in almost every episode during the show's first five seasons (although he seems unconcerned and only hates the fact that nobody cares that he dies), with only a few exceptions. Due to his hood, which covers his mouth in all but a few scenes in the show's history, his lines are muffled, though occasionally they are intelligible, and closed captioning sometimes clarifies his lines. He has only spoken without being muffled on two occasions: the movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and the episode "The Jeffersons". When he is frightened, Kenny will tighten his hood, which hides his face and muffles his speech to an even greater extent.

[edit] Kevin McCormick

Little is known about Kevin, he appears to be older than Kenny by a few years and has parted brown hair which sticks up. His voice is provided by Trey Parker and sounds like Bill, Terrance and Fosse, three of Kenny's classmates.

[edit] The Stotch Family

[edit] Stephen and Linda Stotch

Stephen and Linda Stotch are Butters' parents. They are most often depicted as harsh and authoritarian parents who will punish Butters for any misdemeanor, even things which are not his fault. (For example, in the episode Toilet Paper they attack Butters for confessing to TP'ing the art teachers house, when he hadn't - Butters defense that he was "shot up with sodium pentathol")

Linda wears a maroon dress and has blonde hair, and displays a submissive personality. She is employed as an engineer. Stephen wears an olive drab shirt and a distinctive white tie, with a hairstyle similar to a grown-out crewcut. His appearance implies a military background of some sort, possibly explaining why Butters refers to him as "Sir". In Butters' Very Own Episode he was revealed as a closet homosexual (or bisexual), prompting Linda to try and kill Butters before attempting suicide. The events have never been mentioned since, as the episode ended with Stephen (then named Chris) promising to resolve his "deviant" issues. In a later episode, Cartman, pretending to be Butters while talking to Stephen on the phone, called him 'queero.'

[edit] Butters Stotch

Main article: Butters Stotch

Leopold "Butters" Stotch (voiced by Matt Stone) is a fictional character in the animated television series South Park. Originally called "Poof Poof" and "Swanson", his nickname is a play on the word butterscotch, and it may derive from his hair color, or because he is sometimes butterfingered (clumsy). Butters has a large tuft of blonde hair on top of his head, and wears an aquamarine jacket with green pants. He speaks with a distinctive, stuttering South Carolina-esque accent. The character is loosely based on South Park director of animation Eric Stough, whom Parker and Stone regarded as a "goody-goody" because he always worried about causing offense. Butters' parents are always yelling at Butters when Cartman does something stupid.

[edit] The Tweek Family

[edit] Mr. and Mrs. Tweek

Main article: Mr. and Mrs. Tweek

Tweek's parents own a coffee shop, called Tweek Bros. Coffee, which might be a nameplay on Peet's Coffee and the term "tweaked" for someone who is hyper after consuming too much caffeine. Unlike Butters' parents, they aren't at all abusive, but their parenting skills aren't much better, as they claim (they may either believe or lie) that Tweek has attention deficit disorder, although his problems obviously stem from the fact he drinks too much coffee. Tweek's father, Richard Tweek, has a penchant for the extended use of metaphors for coffee. In the episode Underpants Gnomes, he also sanctioned the use of children in political commercials to push his point of view. He also occasionally makes playful jokes that freak his son out.

[edit] Tweek

Main article: Tweek

Tweek was temporarily the fourth friend of the boys in the absence of Kenny. He was first introduced in a primary role in the episode "Gnomes". He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tweek who run a local coffee shop called Tweek Bros. Coffee. He is a very shaky and high strung character presumabily a result of the amount of coffee he drinks. His parents stated in "Gnomes" that he had ADD, however that hasn't been reiterated and may just be his parents denying his problem.
