List of Quebec senators
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of members of the Canadian Senate from the province of Quebec.
Quebec has 24 permanent Senate divisions.
In Quebec, Senate divisions are fixed and represented by one member, unlike other provinces where no such divisions legally exist. Senators must also either own property worth $4,000 or maintain a residence in their division.
[edit] Current Quebec senators
The province of Quebec has 24 senate divisions which are constitutionally mandated. In all other provinces, a senate division is strictly an optional designation of the senator's own choosing, and has no real constitutional or legal standing. A senator who does not choose a special senate division is considered a senator for the province at large. As of September 21, 2006 there are 2 seats vacant in Quebec.
1 Senators are appointed by the Governor-General of Canada on the recommendation of the prime minister listed.
[edit] Members by Senate division
The boundaries for all Quebec districts are mandated in the Constitution Act 1867 and cannot change without a constitutional amendment. The boundaries are described in the 1859 Consolidated Statutes of Canada.
Quebec and Acadie Senate divisions are self designated, for senators who were appointed under the Regional Expansion Clause that Brian Mulroney used to increase the Senate seats by 2 senators for each region, Ontario Quebec the Maritimes and the Western Provinces on September 27 1990.
