The Lingnan University (LU)(Traditional Chinese: 嶺南大學, Simplified Chinese: 岭南大学, pinyin: Lĭngnán Dàxué) in Hong Kong is the youngest local university. It was formerly known as the Lingnan College (嶺南學院) until it was granted full university status on July 30, 1999.

The Lingnan College was established in 1967 and in 1995 it moved from Stubbs Road to its present campus in Tuen Mun. Since 1995, the president of the university is Prof Chen Kwan-yiu, Edward.

The university is the only liberal arts university in Hong Kong. It believes in the ethos of a liberal arts education to nurture students with personal attributes that are crucial for future success: adaptability, brain-power and creativity.

The original Lingnan University was established in Guangzhou. See Lingnan University (Guangzhou).

Lingnan University Ordinance mentioned the aim of the establishment of the Lingnan College in 1967: "...in order to continue and foster the tradition and spirit of service of Lingnan University founded in 1888 in Canton, China."

[edit] History

Lingnan University, formerly Lingnan College, is the youngest university in the territory, yet has the longest-established tradition among the local institutions of higher education. The University was incorporated on 30 July 1999 following the enactment of the Lingnan University Ordinance. Its history, however, dates back to 1888, when its forerunner, the prestigious Lingnan University in Guangzhou (Canton) was founded.

The former Lingnan College was established in 1967. In 1978, it was officially registered as an approved post-secondary college under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance. Following the successful institutional review by the United Kingdom Council for National Academic Awards in 1987, the Government invited the then University and Polytechnic Grants Committee (UPGC) to advise on the upgrading of the College to tertiary status and in 1991, the College came under the aegis of the UPGC and began to offer first degree programmes.

In July 1992, the College was formally incorporated under the Lingnan College Ordinance as a degree-conferring tertiary institution fully funded by the UPGC. With its new status and improved funding, Lingnan moved rapidly to develop its portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of study.

In 1995, Lingnan moved to its present location in Tuen Mun, which incorporates hostel accommodation for 1,500 students out of its 2,000 total enrolment. This high proportion of residential students enables them to receive more personalised attention from faculty and staff, and prepares them better for subsequent career.

As a result of Institutional Review conducted by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in January 1998, Lingnan was granted self-accrediting status in September 1998 and university title in July 1999. Building on these foundations, the University will strive to achieve its goal of becoming a liberal arts university of international repute with Hong Kong characteristics, encompassing the best of Eastern and Western cultural traditions.

A core characteristic of Lingnan's undergraduate programmes is the integration of professional knowledge with general education, which aims to produce graduates with the human and intellectual resources that are requisite for future leaders in a changing world. Another core characteristic of the programmes is their international orientation, which embraces both global and comparative perspectives.

Besides the international orientation in the study programmes, the University seeks to promote interaction and exchange with other institutions of higher learning throughout the world. The University has entered into agreements for student exchange programme with higher educational institutions in many parts of the world, such as the Chinese Mainland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.

In accordance with the aim of a liberal arts education to help individual students to bring their specific potentialities to bear upon their own education, the University has implemented a credit-based system designed to provide the richest learning opportunities possible across disciplinary boundaries. In addition to taking compulsory and elective courses in their main discipline, as well as required credits in English, Chinese, General Education and Information Literacy, students now have greater flexibility to accumulate credits towards their degrees by choosing from the pool of elective courses available across all programmes of study.

[edit] The Community College at Lingnan University (CC)

In January 2003, the University established The Community College to provide full support for one-year pre-associate degree and two-year associate degree programmes on a full-time basis. They are designed to provide an educational experience that prepares students for work and an enriched life as educated persons, as well as a solid foundation for the possibility of further studies.

The new Community College Building has been completed in the academic year 2004-05. The new academic block provides teaching and other facilities for associate degree and pre-associate degree students, including lecture rooms, computer and language laboratories, laboratories for science subject, art studios, a Christian activities centre, multi-purpose rooms, student consolation rooms and a student function hall.

[edit] Lingnan Institute of Further Education (LIFE)

The establishment of the self-funded Lingnan Institute of Further Education (LIFE) in April 2001 has put Lingnan's fervent belief in "Education for Service" into action. LIFE aims at enabling and encouraging students to learn continuously and to obtain recognised qualifications for their career and personal development.

The main objectives of LIFE are:

  • To offer courses and programmes to secondary school leavers and young adults to help them prepare for employment and career development.
  • To build continuous learning ladders for students so they can continue to study up to degree level, e.g. from Certificate to Diploma, Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree and Postgraduate Degree.
  • To offer courses and programmes to junior executives and supervisors of major industries and various service sectors to enhance their performance.
  • To collaborate with local professional bodies to offer courses leading to professional qualifications, e.g. in Accounting, Banking, Laws, Logistics etc.
  • To collaborate with overseas and Chinese Mainland institutions to help students obtain recognized degrees and professional qualifications.
  • To conduct research on continuing education to bring about excellent practice for LIFE and the continuing education sector.

[edit] Hostel Accommodation

Hostel life is considered as an informal education by Lingnan University. All full-time UGC funded undergraduate students are required to stay at student hostels on campus for at least one academic year within their duration of study at the University and the majority of students might stay for two academic years.

There are 6 blocks of student hostels in Lingnan University providing 1,500 hostel places for Lingnan students since 15th April 1997.

The student hostels are divided into two zones:

(a) Southern Hostels

  • William M. W. Mong Hall, The Bank of East Asia Hall (Hostel A)
  • Tsung Tsin Association Hall, Fok Cho Min Hall (Hostel B)
  • Chung Shun Hall, Yee Man Hall (Hostel C)
  • Lam Woo Hall (Hostel D)

(b) Northern Hostels

  • The Jockey Club Hall (Hostel E, F)

The lower floors of hostels are for male student residents and the upper floors female student residents. All student rooms are for double occupancy.
