Leon County in the Civil War

Leon County, Florida participated heavily in the Civil War. Leon County had 3 Confederate army camps: Camp Leon located in what is now Belair on the south side of Tallahassee, Camp Lay, and Camp Mary Davis. Leon County sent several of its sons off to the Civil War. Below is a list of soldiers that served.

Organized and mustered into Confederate service for 12 months at Chattahoochee, Florida on April 5, 1861. Failed at reorganization about February 1862. Men who reenlisted organized into four companies as the 1st McDonell's Infantry Battalion about February 1862.

The 1st Florida Infantry Regiment took up its first assignment as Department of West Florida, April-October 1861. Second assignment was Department of Alabama and West Florida, October 1861. Third and last assignment was Army of Pensacola, Department of Alabama and West Florida, October 1861-February 1862.

The 1st Florida Cavalry organized in July 1861, at Tallahassee and left for the western theater in 1862. Members of the regiment came primarily from Alachua, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Leon, Levy Nassau and Suwannee counties.

Siege of Knoxville, the Kentucky Campaign, at the Battle of Chickamauga and Battle of Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, Hood’s Tennessee Campaign, and the Carolinas Campaign. The 1st Florida Cavalry Regiment surrendered in North Carolina in April 1865.

The 2nd was organized by companies between April and July 1861. Mustered into Confederate service for 12 months near Jacksonville, Florida on July 13, 1861. It was reorganized on May 11, 1862.

Company M was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Regiment shortly after the Battle of Seven Pines (May 31-June 1, 1862 making twelve full companies. Soon after, Company M entered the war at the battles of Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mill, Savage Station, Frazier's Farm and Battle of Malvern Hill. Men from Leon County:

  2. Betton, Captain Julian. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant Dec. 29, 1861 then promoted to Captain. Wounded at Gettysburg, Jul 2, 1863.
  3. Eppes, 1st Lt. John W. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Commissioned as surgeon by Sec. of War, James Seldon. Also served as cavalry surgeon.
  4. Hampton, Captain Elliot L. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Began as 3rd Sergeant, promoted to 3rd Lieutenant Dec. 27, 1861. Killed in action at the Gettysburg July 3, 1863.
  5. Parkhill, Captain George W. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Killed in action at Gaines' farm, Oct. 1862.
  6. Parkhill, Captain Richard C. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Began as a 3rd Lieutenant. Wounded at Frazier's farm. Resigned in the latter part of 1862.

  8. Perkins, Captain John Day. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Began as 1st Corporal. Promoted to Lieutenant then Captain. Disabled at Gettysburg. Captured and imprisoned at Cape Henry and Point Lookout. Exchanged Mar. 9, 1864.
  9. Whitehead, Captain Amos. - Mustered in Aug. 20, 1861. Began as sergeant and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in December 1861. Wounded and disabled at the Battle of Sharpsburg. Resigned.

[edit] 2nd Florida Cavalry

The 2nd Florida Cavalry Regiment was organized in late 1862 from independent companies, but never fought together as a regiment. Recruits were from Tallahassee, Milton and Gadsden, Madison, Marion and St. Johns counties.

Detachments of the 2nd Florida Cavalry fought at Battle of Olustee, Battle of Gainesville, Battle of Station Four, and Battle of Natural Bridge. A detachment also was involved in the sinking of the SS Columbine.

The 2nd Florida Cavalry surrendered in May 1865.
