Langebæk

Langebæk is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Storstrøm County on the southeastern tip of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in south Denmark. The municipality includes the islands of Langø, Tærø and Lilleø, and it covers an area of 101 km². It has a total population of 6,332 (2005). Its mayor is Henrik Holmer, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Langebæk. Other towns in the municipality are Kalvehave, Mern, Sandvig, Stensby, Stensved, and Viemose.
Neighboring municipalities are Præstø to the north and Vordingborg to the west. The municipality is surrounded by water on two sides— to the east and to the south. To the east is Hølen, a strait separating Zealand from the island of Nyord, and then further south is Stege Bay (Stege Bugt), which is the main body of water separating the municipality from the next major island to the southwest, the island of Møn. Møn, which is also a municipality, is thus Langebæk's municipal neighbor to the east and south. At the narrowest point between the two island to the south of Langebæk municipality, the waters are named Wolf Strait (Ulvsund). There are a number of islands in the waters between Zealand and Møn, including the municipality's islands of Langø, Tærø and Lilleø municipality.
The Queen Alexandrine Bridge connects the municipality, and the island of Zealand, to Møn at the town of Kalvehave. The bridge opened for traffic on May 30, 1943, and is named after Queen Alexandrine, the Queen Consort of King Christian X. The bridge is 746 meters long.
By January 1, 2007 Langebæk municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Møn, Præstø, and Vordingborg municipalities to form an enlarged Vordingborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 615 km² and a total population of 46,307 (2005). The municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
