La Altagracia (aka Higüey) is the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic.
Until 1968 it included what is now La Romana province.
The name commemorates a painting, Our Lady of La Altagracia, which was brought here from Spain in the early 16th century. Miracles are attributed to it.
