The school crest is the Burning Bush. The origin of the Burning Bush is found in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 3, verses 1-12 in the Bible.

Today the crest speaks to us of God’s presence in out midst. The life of the school is holy ground to God. We must see to it that the life of the school is always an honourable life lived with respect for one another and reverence for God. The crest reminds us that God is at work in our midst and that He will lead and guide us and enable the school to be even better.

[edit] Motto

The school motto "Aflame for Truth" appears above the crest.

It emphasizes the undying fire within us and is a reminder of perseverance in the pursuit of truth. We are here to learn the spirit of perseverance in seeking the Truth and we desire this spirit to remain throughout life.

[edit] History

[taken from KCPPS website]

In 1924, two Christian Ministers, the Reverend Tay Sek Tin and the Reverend Tan Leng Tian, who saw the need to provide a school which would also serve as an evangelistic centre, founded Katong Girls' School at 1 Joo Chiat Terrace. It had a modest enrolment of 11 pupils, both boys and girls. English and Chinese classes were conducted.

In 1925, the school moved to new premises at Koon Seng Road and was named Choon Guan School. In 1934, Miss Margaret Dryburgh was appointed Principal. Educational standards were raised and in 1936 the English section became a separate school called Choon Guan English School. In 1938, it became a 'grant-in-aid' school for boys and Mr J R Richardson became the principal.

Subsequently the same year, a school for girls, called Kuo Chuan Girls' School, was opened at 36 Joo Chiat Lane with Miss Margaret Dryburgh as principal. It had one hundred girls and three teachers. During the Japanese Occupation, the school was bombed and remained closed for the duration of the war while the boys' school became a Japanese school named Koon Seng Road School.

Nineteen days after the end of the Japanese Occupation, on 24th September 1945, the boys' school reopened, once again with Mr Richardson as Principal. To accommodate those who could not gain admission, Dryburgh English School was established as an afternoon school. The girls' school did not open until the next year and Miss Monica Sirkett arrived from England in 1947 as Principal.

Meanwhile, the boys' school was making rapid progress and in 1949 the first group of students sat for the Cambridge School Cambridge Certificate Examination. The next year, the school was renamed Presbyterian Boys' School. In 1951, Mr. B F Atherton arrived from Britain to take over as Principal and when he left in 1958, Mr. Gay Wan Guay succeeded him.

Progress was also being made in the girls' school. It became a full government-aided school in 1951 and two years later, the first group of students sat for the Cambridge Examination.

In line with government policy, Dryburgh English School was merged with Presbyterian Boys' School under Mr Sia Kah Hui who served as principal from 1961 to 1963. Succeeding principals were Mr Wee Choon Siang. Mr Poon Meng Seng, Mr Tan Choong Yan and two Acting Principals.

In 1970, the schools' sense of identity was given a boost with the adoption of a school anthem. The words were derived from a competition among the staff and students of Presbyterian Boys' School while Mr Samuel Ting Chu San specially wrote the music. In 1972, Miss Sirkett retired after twenty-five years of tireless, fruitful and dedicated service. Succeeding Principals were Mrs Lee Choon Neo from 1972 to 1977, Mrs Mabel Lew from 1978 to 1983 and Madam Kang Swee Chin from 1984 to 1990.

The two schools reached another important milestone when in 1985 they were amalgamated into one co-educational full school called Kuo Chuan Presbyterian School. In 1987, the full school developed into two schools, named Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School, headed by Mrs Goh Soo Sim, and Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School, which continued to be headed by Madam Kang. As the school building and facilities had become increasingly inadequate, the Ministry of Education allocated the school a new site at Bishan Street 13. The Primary School moved to its present site in November 1987 while the secondary school was relocated in June the next year. In January 1991, Mr Low Eng Kee succeeded Madam Kang as principal. Miss Jessie Tan succeeded the Primary School Principal Mrs Goh who retired in 1994.

Miss Jessie Tan was assigned by the MOE to start up Yew Tee Primary School in Chua Chu Kang in December 1999. Mdm Kew Mee Ying took over as the new principal then. The school was earmarked for upgrading by the MOE at the end of 1999 and was completed in 2002.

Today the schools stand witness to the spirit of our pioneers who, at that time, saw education as a mission field. We give thanks and Glory to God for His undying faithfulness and provision throughout the years.

[edit] School Song

We pledge to thee our school, our loyalty;
Our faithful service render we to thee.
Here 'neath thy banner, we shall take our stand;
Thy precepts we shall cherish and defend.
"Aflame for Truth" our motto ever be,
Our sacred emblem the Burning Tree.
"Aflame for Truth" our motto ever be,
Our sacred emblem the Burning Tree.

Teach us to build a brotherhood of man
Till truth and justice o'er the world shall span.
Grant us the strength to love, the will to give,
The grace to live, the gladness to forgive.
Teach us, in faith, to trust God's Fatherhood,
His plan for man His purpose for our good.
Teach us, in faith, to trust God's Fatherhood,
His plan for man His purpose for our good.

Stand like the brave united we shall be;
One happy, strong and peaceful family,
Here 'neath the flag the anthem loud we raise,
Together we shall sing our song of praise.
Together we shall strive courageously,
God bless our school and may we steadfast be,
Together we shall strive courageously,
God bless our school and may we steadfast be.

Composer: Samuel Ting

[edit] School Hymn

O Jesus strong and pure and true,
Before thy feet we bow;
The grace of earlier years renew,
And lead us onward now.

The joyous life that year by tear
Within these walls is stored,
The golden hope, the gladsome cheer,
We bring to Thee, O Lord.

Our faith endow with keener power
With warmer glow our love;
And draw these halting hearts of ours
From earth to things above.

In paths our bravest ones have trod
O make us strong to go,
That we may give our lives to God,
In serving Man below.

Scorn we the selfish aim or choice,
And love's high precept keep,
Rejoice with those that do rejoice
And weep with those that weep.

So hence shall flow fresh strength and grace,
As from a full-fed spring.
To make the world a better place,
And life a worthier thing.

William Walsham How, 1823-97
[The 3rd and 4th stanza is usually not sung at school ceremonies.]

[edit] Programmes

Drama in the Classroom was introduced for P1-5 students in 2006. This gives them an opportunity to participate in Drama Activities, preparing them for their respective EL performances. Students also have e-learning activities in the computer labs.

[edit] Uniform

The KCPian uniform consists of a black pinafore over a white collared blouse for the girls, and a white tee-shirt and black shorts for the boys. The school crest is embroidered on the pinafore/ shirt and a name tag which denotes the year they are in by its colour is ironed on top of the school crest. The name tag colour is assigned based on when they enter.

Students are required to wear white socks (ankle socks are not allowed), and black canvas shoes from 2006. Previously, white canvas shoes were worn. Most of the students followed the change, but some of the students from the old batches still wear white shoes.

Prefects, who are from Primary 5 and 6, wear an additional tie. The tie is navy blue in colour and the red burning bush is embroidered on it. Trainee Prefects, who are from Primary 2 - 4 classes, wear a Trainee Prefect Badge.

School socks with the burning bush and the initials 'KCPPS' are available, but it is not compulsory to be worn by all students. Hair below collar length must be tied up neatly, and no hair accessories other than black and dark blue ones must be worn.

The PE uniform consists of a dry-fit tee-shirt, with the KCPPS crest at the front and the house names at the back. Navy blue FBT shorts with the KCPPS crest in white in the corner are also worn. Students must wear the tee-shirt of a particular colour (blue, red, yellow, green or purple) according to which house they are in. Some classes also create their own T-shirts, which are worn with the school PE shorts.

For more information on the houses, please refer to the next section.

[edit] Houses

There are five houses: Atherton (blue), Dryburgh (red), Richardson (yellow), Lee (green) and Sirkett (purple). They are named after five past principals of Kuo Chuan Girls' School/ Presbyterian Boys' School. [Please refer to our school history]. The House System was introduced in 2000.

The five houses take part in friendly competitions throughout the school year, allowing members of every house to contribute to their house's tally of points while doing something they like. Five, four, three, two and one points are awarded to the champion, 1st runner up, 2nd runner up, 4th and 5th house for each event respectively.
