KLSU-FM
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
KLSU is a student-run alternative music outlet licensed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The station, which is owned by Louisiana State University, broadcasts at 91.1 MHz with an ERP of 5 kW.
KLSU is unusual in that its callsign begins with a K but is located on the east side on the Mississippi River, which should have it beginning with a W. During the application period for the station, it was discovered that another station had the desired callsign WLSU, so an exemption to the rule was allowed since the station, just within a mile of the Mississippi River, was so close to the dividing line.

[edit] History
The station was formed by LSU students in 1967 as a Class D station. In 1984 it was granted a full-time license by the FCC, along with an upgrade in power and the granted KLSU calls.
During its heyday in the late eighties, KLSU broke much of the popular european music in the US, and was well respected in the college radio sphere as being on the cutting edge of new alternative and world music. However, political changes at the station caused a shift in the mid nineties which resulted in large portions of the collection being illegally thrown away and the format changed to a more 'mainstream' playlist, presumably at the demands of the increasingly conservative student population. Currently there has been some movement back towards a more diverse content, and some popular Jazz and Club shows still remain.

Many popular bands stopped in to the studio while they were in town touring, or simply recorded StationID voice-overs for the station.
