Kitty Jones

Kathleen "Kitty" Jones, a character from Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. In the trilogy, Kitty is a commoner and a member of an underground association where she works against the magicians and government in an underground rebellion called the Resistance.

She is described as dark haired (cut to just above her shoulders), dark brown eyed, and heavy browed. Her personality is stubborn and driven which makes for a good member of the Resistance. Her parents own a luxury leather store: she and the other Resistance members also dress mainly in leather jackets.

A commoner who is one of the main characters of the trilogy, she appears in book one, but only for a few scenes, and has about 2 pages for her and her fellow Resistance members. However in book two, The Golem's Eye she assumes a much larger role and some of the story is from her point of view. In book two she is duped into unleashing a terrible afrit (Honorius) onto the streets of London. In book three, Ptolemy's Gate, she assumes a more important role as she searches to look for an end to the human-djinni hatred, and delves into some of Bartimaeus's history. By the end of the trilogy she is a developed main character. Mutual romantic feelings between Nathaniel and Kitty are also strongly hinted at in the third novel.

Character progression arguably reaches its peak by the end of book two.

There is very little information on Kitty during the first chapter of The Bartimaeus Trilogy, and the few scenes in which she does appear she is portrayed as a villain, or at least, someone hindering Nathaniel during his initial quest. Though readers are not led to think especially well of Nathaniel at this time, Kitty's attack on him comes at a time when there is possibility for him to reform from his mostly arrogant ways and this portrays Kitty in a bad light.

After her brief mention in the first book, Kitty's character is blocked out within the first few chapters, revealing a much more interesting and slightly tragic history than that of Nathaniel. Kitty quickly becomes one of the main protagonists of the book, contrasting the oppressive nature of the magicians and giving an insight into what had previously seemed a terrorist movement – The ‘Resistance’ – of which Kitty is a part is a group determined to fight the oppression of commoners by the Magician’s government. Within the book Kitty is betrayed and twice has to run for her life, ultimately proving herself when she saves Nathaniel’s life by killing the Golem, though Nathaniel gets the credit for this.

Years later, and under the cover of two false identities, Kitty begins to search for Bartimaeus after the enlightening conversation she had with the Djinni in book two. Where previously Kitty had thought demons such as Bartimaeus were soulless and willing servants to the magicians, her discovery that the spirits are in fact slaves sparks an idea that djinn and commoners can work together against the magicians. Though this idea is initially dismissed by Bartimaeus, who is too old and too beaten to think things can ever change, Kitty’s act of faith in him ultimately convinces him that she is right and the state of the world and the other place may move onward and pass the rule of their tyrannical oppressors.
