KFJM is the second oldest radio station in North Dakota after WDAY-AM, and one of the first college radio stations in the United States, operated by the University of North Dakota.
[edit] History
KFJM signed on in 1923 on the AM dial. Its frequency has changed throughout the years from 1310, 1370, and 1440. Its most recent AM frequency was on 1370. In 1995, it began its FM signal on 90.7 FM, which is where it is today. During April 1997, both stations went off the air as the floodwaters went through the transmitter. On July 31, 2002, KUND-AM and KFJM went off the air due to shortages from public funding. The stations went back on the air on August 6, 2002 simulcasting the North Dakota Public Radio network. Soon after, NDPR brought back the station's former format of alternative, blues, and jazz music with NPR news and PRI programs. The station is now operated by Prairie Public, NDPR's successor. UND sold KUND-AM to Real Presence Radio in March 2004. KUND changed its call letters to KWTL, and has ever since carried EWTN, a Catholic radio network. On August 9, 2006, KFJM moved its transmitter from the University of North Dakota campus to a tower located in the Grand Forks industrial park.[1]
[edit] Programming
Popular national programs on KFJM are The World Cafe with David Dye and American Routes, along with National Public Radio's Morning Edition. The studios are located on the University of North Dakota campus. Many listeners choose to listen to KFJM online on its website. KDSU 91.9 FM, Prairie Public's Fargo affiliate, rebroadcasts KFJM during the midday and overnights during the weekdays outside of Prairie Public and NPR programming.
