Main article: Everybody's Changing

Everybody's Changing was Keane's first hit and the song that allow them to sign with Fierce Panda and later with Island Records. It was one of biggest hits through 2004. Despite the fact that release didn't reached top 4, it was one of the main singles on Hopes and Fears. The single was released twice, firstly by Fierce Panda and one year later by Island.

[edit] Somewhere Only We Know

This is, perhaps, Keane's most famous song due to its several appereances on television. It was the most successful Keane single until Is It Any Wonder?, reaching the top 3 in UK. It also has been featured on movie trailers and videogames. Keane haven't given a specific meaning for the song, but it has been related with trees (see main article for details). The song was the first single released on the Hopes and Fears era in February 16, 2004. The design of the covers remained until late 2005.

[edit] Hopes and Fears

Main article: Hopes and Fears

Hopes and Fears is Keane's debut album and also their most successful release to date, with over 5,500,000 copies sold worldwide, number expecting to be succeeded by Under the Iron Sea (currently sold around 2,000,000).
The five single-album reached the top 1 with 155,373 copies during its first week in the UK. First, third and fifth week remained at number two, tooping on the second, fourth and sixth. It came out from the top ten in its 23th week, returning to top 1 after winning a Brit Award in its 40th week to finally disappear from the top in its 45th week. However, it remained on the UK Albums Chart for 72 weeks, reappearing with the release of Under the Iron Sea. It returned to charts after the release of Under the Iron Sea, reaching the top 54 on its 117th week of sale.

[edit] Is It Any Wonder?

Officially the second single from Under the Iron Sea, Is It Any Wonder? is Keane's most successful single to date. Released in May 29, 2006, the single quickly reached the top 1 on iTunes digital shop, and the top 3 on the UK Singles Chart. This song increased the fame of Keane in the United States, where some people who didn't like their music started listening to it.

However, the recordings of this releases had been leaked into the Internet. Both two studio albums from Keane had topped the UK Albums Chart and only Under the Iron Sea made #4 on the Billboard 200 (US), an acceptable number compared with its predecessor (#45).

[edit] Information about early songs

[edit] A Heart To Hold You

This song was never recorded in a studio but it's well-known by some fans of the band, as a recording from the radio was leaked into the Internet in 2005 and there were even polyphonic ringtones of it.
Keane were asked to do a Christmas song to be played on BBC Radio 1 London on Christmas Eve. The song was firstly called The Bing Crosby Song or The Bing Crosby One, because of the association of Bing Crosby to Christmas. Tim Rice-Oxley, pianist and composer of the band composed it circa November 2004 It was first played at the Jo Whiley Show on Radio 1, in December 24, 2004. It was played during that week every day.
Rice-Oxley had never given a meaning to this song but the lyrics express trust and love for someone.
The instrumentation does not include drums but a tambourine and the piano.
The song was played again on December 11, 2005 on the same show, refered now by Radio 1 as a "Christmas Anthem".

Later, Keane also covered Irving Berlin's Christmas classic White Christmas. This version featured some lyrics invented by Keane and the including of the first original chorus, frequently omitted by other artists. As A Heart To Hold You, this wasn't recorded too, but played on Steve Lamacq's Evening Show on Radio 1.

It appears on an album titled The Brown's Album, crediting Tim Rice-Oxley and Tom Chaplin and dated 1996. The name appears as Matey Melon. The song was mixed in March 2001 as More Matey to be released on Wolf at the Door but for some reason it didn't make it. The recording distributed by the site in early 2001 features only piano and vocals but an earlier 1999 version performed live included drums and guitar as well.

[edit] The Happy Soldier

Considered the most rare recording of Keane ever made, this song was leaked from a sampler CD from the James Sanger recording sessions in late 2001. Keane specifically doesn't want this recording to be distributed as they say now they have a very different perspective that would be destroyed with the song's theme and lyrics. Some fans who actually found the recording keep distributing it between theirselves eventually. This song was also the last Keane recording with guitar so it also marks the transition to the piano era of the band.

[edit] The Silence Of An Alien

Tom Chaplin mentions this song on Strangers, with him providing the lyrics and Tim the music. Chaplin mentions he composed his first song when he was about 13 years old. As this was probably first Keane song ever it could have been composed circa 1991.
