Kandali Festival

Kandali Festival is a festivals of Bhotiya tribe of the Pithoragarh district of Uttaranchal state of India.This festival is coincides with the blooming of Kandali plant,which flowers once in twelve years.It is organised in Chaudas valley between August to October. It is celebrated for the killing of the Zorawar Singh's army, who attacked this area from Ladakh in 1841.The ladies go out in procession in their traditional attire to destroy shrubs of Kandali, where those soldiers were hidden.His demoralised army returned along the Kali river,looting the villages on the way.The ladies resisted them and this is enacted till today. The time of the occasion is of great festivities with great eatings and dances coupled with local brew 'Chakti'. Kandali bloomed last time in 1999 and next festival will be held in 2011.
