Jungdok, also known by its English title Addiction, is a 2002 South Korean movie directed by Park Young-hoon.
[edit] Synopsis
Dae-jun, Ho-jun's younger brother, was a person who loved car racing. Ho-jun, on the other hand, loved carpentry, art and gardening. The two brothers were known to be very close. Ho-jun soon married his girlfriend Eun-soo.
Dae-jun decided to take part in a car race final in spite of his brother's objections. Ho-jun's decided to support his brother in the car race, but was late and hailed a taxi. The taxi soon oversped and banged into a lorry, and Ho-jun was left seriously injured. The same time the lorry banged the taxi, Dae-jun's car overturned and injured himself.
Dae-jun and Ho-jun went into a coma. A year later, Dae-jun finally woke up, but was unable to walk properly due in part to his past injuries.
Dae-jun was brought home by Eun-su, and was laid to rest. Dae-jun was seen watering the plants like his brother. As time passes, Eun-su realised that he is behaving exactly the same as her husband, to the extent of his behaviour, tastes and thoughts. Dae-jun tried to convince Eun-soo that he was Ho-jun, but was baffled by the fact.
Dae-jun eventually agreed to go for a hypnosis test. The test was so accurate that the doctor had to conclude that Ho-jun's spirit had entered Dae-jun's body. Eun-su was devastated at the test results.
Eventually, Ho-jun's respirator was removed more than a year after the accident. The doctors explained that Ho-jun's organs were failing and he was already brain dead, thus there is no use for giving him a respirator for long. After the funeral, Ho-jun's ashes were scattered into the sea.
Dae-jun eventually separated from his girlfriend He-jin. Eun-su thought so deeply Ho-jun's spirit was in Dae-jun's body that they had an affair.
Eun-su explored Dae-jun's workroom one day. As she tore open an advertisement poster, she found photos of her youth taken by Dae-jun.
Eun-su went to look for Dae-jun, who still pretended to be Ho-jun. She was very angry at the way how Dae-jun treated her that way by revealing a secret that only Ho-jun and Eun-soo knew. By this time, she was pregnant with Dae-jun's baby.
A flashback tells about Dae-jun begging for forgiveness from his brother while scattering his ashes. He revealed that he loved Eun-soo as much as Ho-jun loved, and lived in the vicinity of his brother. Dae-jun also confessed that he made used of all his brother's secrets to transform himself into Ho-jun, to the extent of sacrificing his own hobbies and behaviour.
It was announced in 2006 that an American version staring Sarah Michelle Geller will be re-made.
