Joseph Hellmesberger, Sr.

Joseph Hellmesberger, Sr (born 1828 – died 1893) was an Austrian violinist and conductor.
He was the son of Georg Hellmesberger, Sr who was himself a musician and teacher. Georg taught his son the violin. Joseph became a violin professor himself in 1851 at the Vienna Conservatoire, also becoming the Director of the Conservatoire. He resigned as professor in 1859, but he stayed on as Director of the Conservatoire until his death.
He founded the Hellmesberger Quartet in 1849.
His son, Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr., was a distinguished musician.
