Johan is a Dutch band around singer/guitarist Jacco de Greeuw. Their music is mostly influenced by acts like The Beatles, Crowded House or The Byrds.

Jacco de Greeuw founded Little Mary Big in the late eighties, after having played in multiple other bands, with which he reached second place in a large national contest. However, arguments with female vocalist Marike Groot (who later appeared on Always..., the debut album of The Gathering), forced them to break up the band. De Greeuw formed a new band with the name of Visions of Johanna after a Bob Dylan song. In 1992 they tried to compete once again in the same national song contest, but stranded in the semi-finals.
After some changes in the line-up, they signed a contract in 1995 and released a single (Swing). One year later, in 1996, they changed the name to simply Johan and recorded their self-titled debut album. The album was received well by Dutch critics and became a minor success. The album was even released in the U.S.A. and they engaged in a small tour.
Although they planned to record a follow-up in 1998, De Greeuw was suffering from clinical depressions, and it took three more years before the second album, Pergola, was released in 2001. The album received favorable reviews and got some airplay on national radiostations. That summer they featured on the Pinkpop festival as replacing act for Orbital. The following year they even received the Dutch Edison award for Best National Popgroup.
After an international tour it became silent again and hardly any news was heard from Johan until 2004, when two band members (Kwakman and Nomden) left the band and were replaced by Jeroen Kleijn and Maarten Kooijman (the latter already being a live band member since 2000). Together with bass-guitarist Diets Dijkstra they started writing new songs for a new album to be released in 2005. However, due to the continuing depressions of De Greeuw and the fact that the new musicians were not fully accustomed to the new band, it took another year before the third album THX JHN was finally released in May 2006.
