Jegerkompaniet / ISTAR is the Norwegian Army's northern-most unit. It is deployed to the world's northern-most military garrison, at 60 degrees north. The company has both conscripts (12 months basic training) and enlisted professional soldiers (grenaders).
[edit] Overview
The unit creates qualified and motivated jegers (Rangers) who trusts themselves as well as others in the most demanding combat operations - professional soldiers that operate behind enemy lines.
The jeger patrol (4-8 men) is the most self-reliant combat unit. It is organized to solve several types of combat missions and must be able to operate alone, far behind enemy lines. To preserve both security and ability to complete their missions, officers as well as enlisted men go through rigorous survival training (SERE) so they are able to make the right decisions under unpredicable and difficult circumstances. Conscripts will after the recruit period go through specialiced training in weaponry, medics or communications. To solve these difficult missions, the jegers have to be both physically and mentally suited. In addition to this, they have to be able to operate and maintain technically advanced weapons, electro-optics, vehicles and communication devices.
The JEGER concept sets demands to overcome operations over large distances. It is challenging, but it creates a unique brotherhood in a combat unit, behind enemy lines that it is dependent on to survive and succeed.
