Jay Nady

Jay Nady is known as a championship boxing referee and the uncle of Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Xavier Nady.

Nady’s career in boxing began when he started refereeing in 1967 on the boxing team at the University of Nevada. As a heavyweight, he was better able to separate fighters during daily sparring sessions. Being the third man, Nady was able to prevent those learning fights from escalating into wars. In 1970 he began refereeing amateur boxing, was professionally licensed in 1972, and has been at it ever since. The exception came when Nady was a member of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Although he maintained his credentials, he didn’t actually officiate during his three-year appointment, and resigned his commission post early to resume his ring duties.
Since 1972, Nady has officiated close to 2500 rounds of professional boxing.
Nady started refereeing professionally in 1972, soon after the legendary Mills Lane started refereeing. Nady often found himself overshadowed as a referee by his friend, Lane, who retired from refereeing in 1999.
Today he is widely regarded as professional boxing's top referee.
