Sazanami was a Fubuki-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Her name means "Curling Waves (Ripples)", or "Pretty, Small Waves Raised by a Zephyr".
On 12 January 1944, Sazanami departed Rabaul to join a tanker convoy en route from Palau to Truk. She was torpedoed and sunk by USS Albacore (SS-218) 300 miles (550 km) southeast of Yap (). Of her crew, 153 died; 89 survivors, including Lieutenant Commander Hashimoto, were rescued by destroyer Akebono.
On 10 March 1944, Sazanami was removed from the Navy List.
